hi guys i've done a search but had no luck, anyway is it possible to have a floged out ball joint with no movement of the wheel when the car is jacked up? and is there another way to test if the ball joint is gone?

Hi,
I'm not sure about modern cars -after mid 80's-
In the old days when cars were not so sophistecated and safe we just used to grab the tyre in situ at about 10 to 2 o'colock and shake it. I can remember sometimes getting a few mm of travel
If it was suspect - seemed like it moved a couple of mm and/or clunked then we used to jack up one wheel and do the same and it should move more and louder. It may not tell you what's worn i.e. tie rods ball joints etc but it still should tell you somethings wrong.

hi matt im a mechanic mate the best way to check it for movement is to jack up your car support it with stands and get a fairly big pair of multy grips and grab top and bottom of the ball joint and try to squeeze it together movement will be there if its worn. also you can get a tire lever or about 1 meter long steel bar with tire about 10cm above ground put in at bottom of tire on an angle and try to lift car not to much as you might tip it over, but this also is trick of the trade. hope this helps you buddy.
