Well... a few months ago, the diff in the soarer went. chucked up a wanted thread for a replacement, and soon enough a user I had never seen before messaged saying he had one for $150... great bargain due to lack of time and only having two hands and limited experience, it took about 6 weeks to get it back on the road.. and all was eventually happy anyways... I just finished changing my rear brake pads... and went to go bed them in... when I noticed a rubbing noise coming from the passenger rear wheel... got the car on stands, and got it running with that wheel off... seems the noise is coming from within the hub... but what was really concerning was the way the diff seems to make this really disturbing constant deep grinding sound when one wheel is stopped, or moving slower than the other I've only had about 4-6 weeks use out of this diff (and no more than 2000k's)... have I been fisted? Should I be looking for another diff... again? Any help would be great thanks

yeah... like I said... needed a diff in a hurry... guess I was in a bit too much of a hurry. probably a bit too much positive thinking to expect that I wasnt going to get shafted by someone on here... was just a bad combination of desperation and too trusting at the time I reckon actually... I paid $250 now I think about it

Have you checked the fluid in the diff? Whenever I get any second hand parts I drain the oil if appropriate to see what it holds and hten refill it with new clean oil. That way i know it has the correct amount of fluid and can check the material in the old oil. Matt.

Yeah Matt... figured that before the new one went in while it was easy to access was the best time... all brand new fluids in it

If its not noisy while driving or cornering then you will probably get your $150 worth and more.

I paid $250... which judging by what other people sell open centres for, seems to be reasonable money for one that is meant to be in good condition. It seems quiet enough from inside the cabin while straight line driving... low speed sharp cornering... normally you dont hear much, but occassionaly there is some noise... infrequent. Just having it on the stands and having it running.... it sounds really alarming the way it grinds when one wheel is slowed or held still while its in drive (on idle... so only doing 20's max)... sounds very much like the sound a grinding bearing makes... which gut tells me could be pinion bearing... and has me thinking the worst case scenario

It sounds rather bad if you think its a bearing. Got any mates near you that know much about diffs? Drifters usually know lots. Maybe get one of them to listen to it.

Yeah... I think thats tomorrows mission, get it up on a hoist at a workshop for an informed diagnosis... and coincidentally the bloke I will be getting to check it out is a drifter as well

just drive it for a while, and then drop oil, a diff will make a little noise if you hold one wheel still, because the other one is going twice as fast, and it is doing that throught the spider gears.. i say tim, just run it for 1000ks be gentle on it, and then drop oil.. and see how bad it is.. unless it is really loud, when driving. i think you have the common, thing that when you change a part ie caliper, you listen really hard for other noises. and you found one, which is not a problem.. it happens all the time a customer brings a car in for a service, do the service he gets it back, then the next day he brings it back and says o the a/c fan is noisy? you get what i saying, that when ever you do work on a car, and get it going again you all ways listen really hard. i bet if the diff got changed with out you knowing, you wouldnt even hear it.. by holding one wheel, you are going to destroy the diff to, it basically doing a one wheel burntout. which stuffs them, as we all know..

250 is about right for a 2nd hand diff anyways. Just sounds like perhaps an unrucky choice. Soo many people seem to replace the centre of their diffs and dont change the bearings .. that is a school boy error. I am assuming though you bought a complete item considering you drained it and all.

Yeah, complete item. Anyways... Michael, thanks for your advice... it pretty much matches what I was given from a local diff shop when I called. Except he said planetary gears?... either ways, the crux of the advice was the same... and that is dont stress Will work on getting rid of the rubbing sound in the hub tonight and then just running it and seeing how it goes.

yeah plantery / spider gears all the same.. just the little gears on the cross shaft.. just change the oil in a little while if you really worried about it, and see how bad it is..

yeah, reckon that will be the plan.... now my mision is to find out what the ticking noise is behind the wheel... sounds like something is catching then flicking... happens every wheel rotation... so up on stands again tomorrow... fun fun Reckon with the amount of wheel changes I been doing I will be on a bathurst pit crew in no time Thanks for the help guys... and David, thanks heaps for your offer and referral.,.. might check that out... I do still have the old diff which has a stuffed pinion bearing, so push comes to shove, I may get that given a once over and brought back to the world of the living if needs be

no, tyres are clean... and we crawled the car at 10k's and it was definitely something catching... I check the dust cover before putting the rotor back on and was pretty sure it cleared everything fine... anyways when I was crawling along and it started making the noise (whatever it was catching)... I stopped imediately and marked to top of the hub with chalk... so when I get it on stands tomorrow, I have an idea at what point in the rotation to be looking for anything contacting where it shouldnt Well, thats the plan anyways

wheel... car has been jacked up and wheel and brake rotor/hub taken off 3 times already trying to find this noise. completely over it and so close to giving up it isnt funny. it sounds as if something is catching on a spring, then flicking off... looking at suspension, inner side of the wheel, and anywhere else that could posible show signs of friction and nothing whatsoever. Oh, and again Michael, thanks for your help on the phone earlier... absolute mystery why it makes this noise while driving, yet get it up on stands and it disappears. Have been searching inside the rotor and looking right over all the handbrake assembly, and it all looks fine... the inside surface on the rotor where the handbrake shoes grip to is clean as well... dont know where of how anything is catching

Michael... drove the car to work yesterday, and during lunch took it to workshop next door... could barely hear the noise, but it was still there... Anyways, they couldnt get me in till wednesday anyways, told me to contact them if it gets worse Today and tonight... noise disappeared. So, all I have wasted is a weekend... touch wood! Bloody mystery though!

I would say it was a hand brake shoe grabbin or rubbing and when the wheel turns it grabs the hand brake shoe and pulls it hence pulling the spring and the little L Noise was just the spring pulling if it happens again pull the hand brake shoes out and try it but I think it will be right I well at least u had a go
