The ongoing problem of trying to get what could possibly be QLD's crappest Soarer (mine) running properly has raised yet another enquiry

After searching through all topics with what might have seemed like a relevant topic title and coming up empty, I'm forcedto raise another topic.

When the vehicle is jacked up, and consequently the strut is extended, what is meant to hold the spring into a permanent position so it doesnt flap about?

At the top there is a rubber boot which (I think) is meant to somehow secure itself to the top of the wheel well where the strut is attached... and the bottom of the spring... it just flaps about... or if the rubber boot at the top doesnt stay attached, which is more often than not the case, the whole spring flaps about around the strut whilst it is extended. Obviously this makes lowering the vehicle off the jack a bit of a fine art as you need to ensure the bottom end of the spring is sitting in the groove on the strut plate before lowering (have had a spring pop off it before and rotate half way down the strut)

I'm running Bilstein struts with an unknown brand of lowered spring.

It just seems like an incredibly dodgy setup... is this meant to be the norm? Its been like this the whole time I have owned it from the previous owner... it doesnt seem to cause any problems... but I still wonder every time I jack it up. It just seems as if the vehicles weight is the only thing that holds the spring into the proper position

Any ideas?

hi tim, yes i have seen that on a number of cars. where the springs just flaps around. when the car jacked up. wrong coil design. or a cut coil, can cause it, it actually pretty unsafe. if the wheel drops the spring can come unseated, and then the car will drop on that side..

my mates gemini did it all the time, and we were forever jacking it up and fitting the springs back in.

also get some photos.

of the rubber boot.

if it what i think what it is, it just a rubber boot to protect the shock shaft, from rocks and the like cheers

Will do Michael.

Going to jack it back up again now.

Yeah, its unseated twice while I have owned it, the first time being when I had no idea about it and lowered it off the jack with no attention to it.

The second time was last night when I did the same in a rush while trying to sort this other problem.

Other than that, every other time I have taken it off the jack and paid attention to where its sitting, it has sat there quite fine.

Nonetheless, it is concerning.

ok... here goes

Strut with spring not attached at top or bottom

Strut with spring attached at top (by attached, I mean the rubber section pushed up and sleeved over the top of the shock)

and the gap between the stopping plate on the strut and the spring when the top of the spring is secured as mentioned above

DAMN! Ok... guess I'm on the lookout for a set of rears now... or just save up for coilovers I guess.

Getting off my ass to do the caliper trick now... will respond in the other thread for that... saves having two theads going offtopic :-)

Thanks again

Definitely a cut spring. Here in NZ you wouldn't get a WOF/roadworthy for non captive springs.

A new set of King rear springs will be pretty reasonable.

It must sit very low at the back!

That is quite low at the back. I have about a 1 finger gap to the tire. Your's looks close to the rim edge!

Its pretty low all round. The original front springs (which Im guessing were most likely Makita specials as well) have already been replaced with a set of superlows that were reset another 20mm according to the person I bought them from

However with the new wheels having a more correct offset on the front, it scrubs like crazy... so... the list of things to replace keeps on growing as I doubt I will be putting cut springs back in there

If you have bump stops in there, and it is scrubbing, it means you most likely have incorrect rolling diameter tyres.
Or you havent rolled your guards yet.

It shouldnt scrun on the plastic wheel arch guards (much anyway0 if you are using the factory bumpstops

Mate id leave it. on mcphearson struts the spring cant fall out because of the dampener and it will reseat anyway if you somehow go over a large bump.

Dave, have checked tyres on placard versus whats on there and they are a perfect match for rolling diametre on the miata.net tyre calculator

I may consider removing the inner gards as yet... not too sure which way I go
