I'm just guessing here, but if you fit 20" plus wheels, surely it's just for egos sake. I mean, V8 supercars use something like 18" and I'm sure you can't get the kind of cornering stresses they endure on the street. It also looks like formula cars use something like 16" with a 60+ profile. I reckon if you ran over a proud ant with 20" wheels you are going to dent your rim.

I was reading a HPI mag the other day and Jason the editor wrote that any import from J no matter what should not have rims bigger than 18inch, for all reasons from wank factor to downright durability. and I agree completely, you would'nt see 20's in the GT500 or JTC.

, easy on the wank factor: a lot of factory cars come with WELL engineered 19"+ rim fitments, and a lot of tyre companies provide performing tyres to suit. However, that said, I cant see the need for specific chassis to go BIGGER than required, I mean, yeah F1 have a specific rolling diamter to match the specific sidewall requirements the treadwear requirements dictate. I mean if drive home to melbourne on my 30 profile 19's, i might need a new set to get back to darwin. Lame, true: but the arches on this particular vehicle look great with 19's, overkilled with 20's but just a little shy with 18's. I mean should only hot hatches have 17" rims that actually fill out the arches? I wouldnt call that 'wank factor' i mean if its so wanky than ALL SPOILERS, ALL METTALLIC PAINTS, ALL ALLOY WHEELS,ALL LOW PROFILE TYRES, ALL SUSPENSION LOWER THAN A PUMPKIN, All STYLING QUEUES in general are just wank factor: right down from TV screens and more than 4 speakers to leather interiors and LCD rear view mirrors. I mean fabric is so much more durable and better in the heat. Ya dig? 17" tyres for the win though, perfect sidewalls

R35 GT-R has 20"s doesn't it? Correct me if im wrong But yes, i generally like to stick to 15"s for oldschool and 17"s and SOMETIMES 18"s for the 90's JDM sportscars. I reckon my 14"s look great. I hate 17"s on the oldschool rx7's, makes them look like rollerskates...completely out of place. Thats anothing thing that annoys me. Offset. What is it with Australia and offset? So many cars getting around that are sunken into the guards. And chances are they're disgusting ROH or "Speedy" wheels out of a catalouge that look like Chrome dinner plates. My rant done.

Some people do it to make themselves feel cool (i.e. "wank" factor) and others really genuinely think they look good (IMO they are horribly misguided, but beauty is a very personal thing) and some cars really do suit big rims - generally when they come that way from the factory (Astin Martins etc) Any way you look at it, 20" look bad on a Soarer.

| Ohhh.... I just made a rant similar to this on a silly BMW forum, after I saw a lovely E38 7 Series with ghetto chrome wheels last night. I felt personally insulted by the sight, enough so that I was compulsed to write something about it. This is what I said. Title: Why do so many BMW's get 'killed' with 'Ghetto' wheels? I just don't understand what is wrong with so many people these days. While waiting for something this evening in Ellerslie, I noticed a nice BMW coming down Ladies Mile, it looked to be a late model E38 728i or another variation with a six cylinder engine. Upon it getting closer, I thought wow, thats clean... but then shock hit my eyes as I got a good profile shot of the car. It had 18 or 19 inch nasty chrome wheels fitted to it, I mean they were just disgusting, that sort of 'acid' style they come in... It just really boggles my mind when I see this, as they instantly give the car a tacky appearance, I guess you find the answer as to why they have had these wheels put on by looking at the type of driver. Interestingly, they actually drove up and down Ellerslie a second time a few minutes later, obviously lost soles thinking they looked pretty 'cool'. Little did they know how revolted I was at the sight of that beautiful car being tarnished with those rolling monstrosities.. I wonder if the owner posts on here? Be great if they read this! Before some of you might say it...... Yes, some will say each to their own and all that bullshit, but the reality is that they DON'T look good by any means and take value off the car in my opinion......... do you see factory BMW's coming out with them? No because they are simply unattractive nor suitable for BMWs, they suit BBS style wheels and what not of that variation! It's called good taste, clearly too many people have none. " Unfortunately, about 5% of the members are good older guys that are serious about their BMW's and sell parts etc, the rest are just dopes with 320i's lowered to the point where they look broken - so the majority of the replies to that were in support of the chrome wheel scene. Hopeless!!

It is and should be each to their own. I have seen numerous posts here from members who have up spec'd their wheels only to have serious performance, suspension, ride, handling and safety and excessive wear issues. I have also seen numerous posts from the -wise- saying "Of course those wheels are not as good stock because the car was not designed, engineered and set up for them." Yep and some of the wheels are pure drooling heart thumping sex. What I do not get is why would you spend big bucks and compromise your car and your safety knowing the dangers. Some obvious metaphor's deleted

Hah! Indeed Mr Kaio. I'm still here. Funny, there are still Soarers chasing me around, at my Film School, at another shop down the back of the unit block theres a person with a TT Soarer in reasonable condition, he always goes quick in it up and down the road, blows a bit of smoke as the TT's do but man it sounds fantastic! If I was to get another Soarer, I'll try find a nice TT or T. When ever that happens. I'm obsessed with this BMW at the moment though. Been doing front end bushes and ball joints etc, running quite smooth now! Also been fiddling with the exhaust, though I made a really CRAP system last week, but Im getting another system done on Thursday which should be FAR superior, I will make a wee post about it to those who are interested in the Kiwi Section. (Only if it sounds good that is!)

| I like the wheels on the Lexus above I am guilty of the 20s "cool" factor too. This was my "Hot Wheels" look. And yes it did look like a roller skate. But I thought it did have a definitive look and stance about it. It was a period however, that I constantly was troubled with unbalanced wheels and the car would start to shudder at speed. Even after trying a few different wheel balancing businesses, the best choice was to go back to my 18s.

Guys I think it was Matthew that said that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Thats the point of all this. I mean I personally love the look of the BN Sports body kit but another member said it was not his cup of tea. This is what it is all about, some want stock standard and others dont, some want the flashy 16 colour harlequin paint that changes to every colour in the spectrum and others just want a plain white or black. So we come back to the wheels, some love the look of a huge arse set of 20" chromies to "Bling" out their cars and others dont. I am not sure that it is a wank factor, i just think it comes down to what we all like as individuals. I just never understood why some seem to get sooooooo offended by other peoples choice of accessory or body kit or paint. Now I want to make this clear guys, I am not saying anyone here is offended or carrying on in that manner, what I am saying is that people do what they do to their cars for their own reason, if we dont want our car looking like that then we wont do it. At the end of the day all we need to know is how much we love our own Soarer's. But just for the record i think everyone has a valid opinion and its a great to see how free we are to voice that opinion in this day and age. Mike by the way your car is awesome, we met at the drive on the weekend, mate i gotta pick your brain on how you got your pillars chrome cos I loved that "Wank factor" about your car hahaha and yes my car also goes faster cos it has Lexus badges on it too. WOOOHOOOO That was my rant guys hope it hasnt upset any one

BMW M6 from factory comes with 21" or as an option. There is one in my street fitted with factory 21's doesn't suit the car IMO. Tyre design has changed considerably in recently years particularly for lower profile tyres but going anything over 19" is going backwards in performance not to mention ride quality. I personally wouldn't go over 18's for my own car.

Something I should add is the main purpose of rims it to mount tyres. Your main concern should be what size tyres you want to fit then find top quality light weight rims to suit.

Top Gear Aust proved it a little while ago when they tested a HSV Commadore with the big option wheels and the same spec car with standard size wheels, I think they were 21" against the 19" and found the one with the bigger wheels was a lot slower around their test track.

yeh i remember that one Paul, it was 21 vs 20s. something ridiculous like 5 seconds off the time. they did say it was due to the huge brakes. anything over 19 just looks stupid on soarers tbh, but if the car is designed to ride on 20's then its not so bad, and it doesnt really spoil the looks.

Considering that the bigger wheels also had bigger brakes, if it was just a change in the wheel size, the lap time difference could have been even bigger.
