•• guys, I have some movement in the steering column. Basically i can move the steering wheel side to side. Bloke at pedders said it was a ball joint in the steering column. Can this be changed or is it the whole column that needs changing?

Ball joint? There is no ball joint in the steering column that I am aware of. Perhaps he meant universal joint? I'd be surprised if that failed though, and it probably wouldn't give the symptoms you describe.
Could be as simple as a stuffed firewall bush. Should be easy to tell, look for movement thru the firewall while someone is moving the wheel around. May also be the steering knuckle which on most cars can be removed and re-furbished, not sure about the Soarer though.
