hi everyone i recently bought a est of rims off a forum member and i'm just trying to clean them up

this is what has built up on them:

been told its corrosion.

and i want to give them a really fine sanding 2000 or 1200grit sand paper. but i need to take out the center piece to do this.

how do i go about this? can i just undo all the bolts (obviously i'd work out what they need to be torqued back up to) and that center piece will just come out? or is this all part of the wheel?

want to do this in a safe way so i dont put them back on and have my rims them self's when i'm driving

anyone have any experience doing this?

this is going years back, but google stuff about old school simmons wheels. i think there was a place in sydney that you send them to to repaired.

googled "simmons wheel repairs" first link

You just have to remember to use sealant when you put them back together Shane. Other than that its pretty straight forward.

You'll have to have the tyre taken off before you can pull the wheels apart.

is that actually a 3 piece rim or just has the bolts in it for visual looks?

As it looks as if its just a visual thing

Shane,
My wheels have done the same thing.

Its the clear coat coming off the polished steel.
If you sand it you will need to go all the way back to metal then re-clear. If you just give them a light sand it will make very little difference.

It might be easier to get them media blasted, polished and then re-cleared.
