Good evening everyone..
Recently i've been in the market for an LSD for my car. Im currently living in Japan and was thinking of buying one in its case and sending it over, installing it as is without fiddling with it. However, the case + the LSD centre etc is over 30kg which cannot be sent by regular mail. I don't know how to send it via container either. So, I thought i might get just a brand new center, and install in that in the current case I have of my car back home. Now am I dreaming that I can do this at home? Or should I be looking at getting some one to do this for me? What is involved in the change from Open to LSD?

Installing a center to your own case is something you really want to get a professional to do Peter.
Its not hard to get the thing working, but the longevity of the diff is going to suffer if the thing isnt shimed/set with the right amount of lash correctly.
Hope that helps.

if your going to do it yourself, its possible to install the diff with the old ring and side bearings/shims and still have the correct preload and backlash, and tooth pattern.
BUT, to do it properly, you will want to remove the case, replace the side bearings and pinion bearings, get a shim kit for the pinion and side bearings. Does the soarer diff run a crush spacer for the pinion? You will want 1 of them to if you do it.
Then its a matter of starting fresh, install ring gear onto diff centre with new bolts torqued to correct specs. Press on side bearings, install diff into housing with no shims and measure the clearance that you have. Select the appropriate sized shim to preload the bearings.
Dummy fit the pinion with no crush spacer or seal, and sinch pinion bolt until there is no endfloat.
Install centre into diff again and paint a few of the ring teeth with bearing blue, rotate pinion while pushing on ring gear to get a tooth pattern, then adjust carrier shims and pinion shims to get the correct tooth pattern, once thats done, remove carrier, remove pinion, install crush spacer and seal, and tighten pinion nut until the correct preload of the pinion bearings is obtained.
Then reinstall carrier, bolt it down, repaint a few ring teeth with bearing blue and recheck the tooth pattern, if all checks out, reinstall rear cover, and shafts and walla diff complete.
