So i'd really like to ditch the standard wheels and go for something that fills the arches nicely but i don't really want to have the arches rolled or have a speedo thats to far out.
What would people recomend? thanks

Anything other than stock Soarer maybe illegal as far as wheel track goes. I run TT wheels on my V8(16")and 17" Lexus on the other. This subject was covered recently on here, so maybe do a search.

Just about everything is illegal Paul, that said, most mechanics wont blink at wheels conservative enough to not require guard rolling.
The 17's that I have are 8 and 9, front and rear respectively and I've never had any problems with rego checks or anyone else. They also don't put the speedo out much, but its still noticeable.

My 18's put the speedo out about 3k's. When the speedo is reading 113, its about 110 real time. My offset is 45 with 18x235's. They could be a little wider to fill the guards at the rear (255's would have been perfect), fronts are quite nicely positioned. Wheels are 18-in Machined Tourmaline alloy wheels from Lexus

The comments made by a couple of people suggesting almost anything non-stock is illegal imply that it is difficult to get what you want legally while no-one will worry too much if you don't comply. That view is at best uninformed and uninformative.
You can go down to +38 offset and there are plenty of wheels out there in the 38-50 offset range which look good and come in a wide range of sizes.
If you are not satisfied with those but would rather up your handling as well as your positions on insurance and possible criminal liability then I can source fluffy dice for you at only $90 per face or a bargain discount at $1090 a pair. Hanging cord extra but you are licensed to use it on yourself.
If you read this then NSW and QLD RTA advice is on the record here so don't think of pretending you never knew.

I agree with David
- Offset between 38-50 will be fine for wheels that arent massively wide - Hub diameter is 60.1mm, if you let the place you buy your wheels from know what car is they should supply you with the right size hub rings. - Use this page http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html to calculate your tyre sizes to try to match the original setup. The general 3 sizes are 17x8 - 235/45/17 18x8 - 235/40/18 18x9 - 265/35/18
Not sure about fully sik 19s.
Yes, you may get defected if you run anything other than a stock car, but usually only if you hang out at maccas and yell at cops.

Spencer, but what happens after you stuff the car into someone.
I wouldn't know Dave, I've never run into anyone.
The only accident I've had was the result of a mechanical failure. That car had the largest sized wheels capable of fitting under a E30 318 and despite that, the insurance went through without a problem.

A. "Largest wheels" does not equate to "illegal offset" so it is not to the point. B. You did not mention hitting anyone, so it is not to the point. C. Was it topic of a police investigation with potential for charges? If not then it was not to the point.
Regardless of answers to any or all of the above, you confuse surviving risk with sense.
I am curious to know what was the mechanical failure?

Here's the relevant section of the NCOPs. Page 17 covers allowable tyre and wheel widths. There are no restrictions on rim diameter, as long as the overall tyre circumference isn't altered too much.
