Is the back cover of the diff able to be removed without dropping the whole thing? I need to seal it up

From my experience Austen I would say no. It will be hard for starters to remove it as you need to get into some hard to reach places. Also the back piece bolts to the rear subframe so all you will have is the two bolts on the side holding it in. I know it is probably not what you want to hear but it would be best to just drop the whole thing out again and then put it back in. Also when you have done it enough times it gets easier and quicker to do provided you have the right tools.

I think it's rooted anyway, it whines on acceleration, the drivers side stub is very loose with up and down movement where as my open diff is tight with NO movement at all.

Seriously considering putting my open diff back in :-(
