Went to get the car look at for rego, turns out that the rear control arms are bent.
Unfortunately I have pretty limited mechanical knowledge (especially compared to the Goo Roo's here!) and I would like to know some answers (they may be stupid questions, bare with me!).
1. I have researched what they are and partly understand, anyone able to give me a dumbed down explanation of their functions? 2. How much would we be looking at for one new? 3. How much 2nd hand? 4. What kind of job is it to replace yourself (looking to do as much as we (mrs and myself) can on this car without mechanics). 5. Is bending of these common? (I drove it to and from the inspection, car felt like it was driving fine?)

It isn't too difficult, but i probably wouldn't do it if you don't feel confident. Take your wheel off and have a look, its pretty straight forward as to what needs to be done.

Not at all, the most common way to bend them is someone being fully sick and smashing a curb trying to get sideways

Hmm, well apparently it has no crash history.
I'm confident in my ability to learn, already done the basics to the car (including replacing the heater tap etc etc), looking to learn more! (Mrs is doing cert II in Auto too).

Bent suspension arms means the car has taken a hit at some point, they dont just bend in normal driving or in minor kerb bumps!
If you dont fix its likely your wheel alignment will be out and you'll chew through tyres and/or have poor handling. Worse case scenario the arm or something near is damaged and could weaken and break...
You'll need to jack the car up to change the part(s), you cant do it while the car is sitting on its wheels whether on a ramp or not

It's your trailing arms that are bent, it looks like the car has been dropped/hit something, both seem to be about the same which I find strange that they would be bent together
