Went to get the car look at for rego, turns out that the rear control arms are bent.

Unfortunately I have pretty limited mechanical knowledge (especially compared to the Goo Roo's here!) and I would like to know some answers (they may be stupid questions, bare with me!).

1. I have researched what they are and partly understand, anyone able to give me a dumbed down explanation of their functions?
2. How much would we be looking at for one new?
3. How much 2nd hand?
4. What kind of job is it to replace yourself (looking to do as much as we (mrs and myself) can on this car without mechanics).
5. Is bending of these common? (I drove it to and from the inspection, car felt like it was driving fine?)

It isn't too difficult, but i probably wouldn't do it if you don't feel confident. Take your wheel off and have a look, its pretty straight forward as to what needs to be done.

Not at all, the most common way to bend them is someone being fully sick and smashing a curb trying to get sideways

Hmm, well apparently it has no crash history.

I'm confident in my ability to learn, already done the basics to the car (including replacing the heater tap etc etc), looking to learn more! (Mrs is doing cert II in Auto too).

I would suggest you not only find out what has bent and why but check closely for any other damage to hubs subframe ect.

I surely will.
Cheers for your help guys.

Would you suggest purchasing car ramps and back up onto them?

Bent suspension arms means the car has taken a hit at some point, they dont just bend in normal driving or in minor kerb bumps!

If you dont fix its likely your wheel alignment will be out and you'll chew through tyres and/or have poor handling. Worse case scenario the arm or something near is damaged and could weaken and break...

You'll need to jack the car up to change the part(s), you cant do it while the car is sitting on its wheels whether on a ramp or not

Just took some pictures.

And of course Phil, I can't believe I thought I could drive the car up on a ramp and take the wheels off... haha!

It's your trailing arms that are bent, it looks like the car has been dropped/hit something, both seem to be about the same which I find strange that they would be bent together

You can see the bend in the thin lower arms.

Looks like they have been jacked against.

Take them off and straighten them in a press.

So you guys think its worth just making them straight myself? Not purchase straight 2nd hand ones?

They are locating arms not load bearing so I can't see any issue with straightening them.

Second hand arms would be easier obviously.

There is a JZZ30 wreck near-ish me.
Hopefully will be able to check it out on Saturday, might be of some use.

I'm told it got a fair ram up the arse.. and has had engine and box removed. Only wants $100 though.

Wonder if the arms (is not dead) will be of use.

I would replace them as they will be easy enough to find and they do take some load under braking and accelleration.

Trying to get some pics of it now.. Seems it got a fair ram up the arse, hopefully what I need isn't destroyed!

Does anyone know if these can be used across different soarers? (His is a JZZ30 I think? And mine is a UZZ31)

Aside from differences in stabiliser thicknesses the suspension components are the same on each model except for the UZZ32

You could also look at buying new aftermarket items available from Costa.

Project D I think they are called.

Yep, looking into both atm.
Will PM costa.

Just hopped under the car again.
Lot more bent on the passenger side.
Passenger side is bent more towards the wheel rather then the front of the car.

And the lug for the air suspension height adjuster on the UZZ31.
