Like Boyd said, Nial can sort it out for you.

You can now buy re-manufactured strut accumulators from Peter (cameron's link) they can take a little while, but you should be right for another 15-20 years.

Otherwise you can't do it Andy, The Sus pump and power steering pump are one unit, so you can't remove the sus pump and keep power steering.

If you really want coils, then buy a UZZ 30, or even an airbagged '31 is a easy job to fit coils to.

Correct me if I am wrong but the rear wheel steering is for parking and only works near full lock?

The front and rear wheels turn together or turn opposite to each other depending on your speed. The rear wheels only turn about 7 degrees though but does knock off 1 metre from the turning circle.

Nope, It's an active 4WS system and is working all the time, One of it's many functions is to reduce the turning circle at low speed to assist with 'u' turns or parking, but it does so much more than that.

thanks for the info guys i was just speaking to mark from hills motor sport in hornsby he just moved from castle hill

he spoke with me regarding changing suspension and said he has done 15 uzz32 model cars and have taken out the 4 shocks, vane pump and valve body and kept the 4ws rack on the back replaced with coil overs for around $2500 -$3000

drive in 2 days later drive out no warning lights on dash including parts and labor running uzz31 pump and a custom hydraulic valve body for the 4ws steering rack

Wow, I have just been thinking of updating this thread, and to have it corrupted with coil over replacement on a 32 is a bit disappointing to say the least!

Andy, what are you actually trying to achieve by ripping out the active suspension? A saving on weight? For what, is this going to be a track car? I think not, as you are converting an auto to another auto. Drag car, I think not because you want to go around corners!

So I guess what I am saying is that before you butcher a UZZ32 and spent $3K doing it, find out the facts about what this car is and what it is capable of, or at least find out the cost of rebuilding it back to its former glory. And if you can't give a about doing that buy a Skyline!

This might be a silly question but is it at all possible to take the parts from a UZZ32 and turn a non-active soarer into an active?

I know it would require a lot of parts but has it been done before? The obvious answer would be to just buy an active soarer but we all know how rare they are... and so many of them have had suspension changed etc hehe

Andy, for 3k you would go pretty close to having the active struts rebuilt and have a far better riding and handling car than coilovers.

FYI you would need to spend ~3k on shocks/dampers alone to get a decent set of coilovers, I'm guessing you're looking at <1k coilovers, which will leave you bitterly dissappointed.

So, take a car that there was less than 900 ever built, probably less than 300 left on the road, and deliberately take away what makes it unique so it will "go fast round corners" and save you cash when you could just buy a lower end model with coilovers.

Pretty fing stupid if you ask me. Might as well buy a Gullwing Mercedes and turn it into a convertible while you are at it.

Reminds me of that dumbarse in NZ who had a UZZ32 and ripped all the active components out so he could "sack it on its nuts" and then hiffed the perfectly good active components in the tip - turned the car into a ghetto trash-heap and had no idea what he'd done.

Andy, if Hills motor sport has done this mod 15 times I'm sure I would have heard something about this before. I'm guessing Dan and Nathan hasn't either.

I find it near impossible to belive that 15 of the 873 UZZ32s made have ended up at the same workshop (S&LC, Bond autotech and SSS excluded) to have them all but destroyed and converted into UZZ30/31.

I strongly suggest you ask them for the contact details of one of these customers. Surely a satisfied return client wouldn't mind showing off their $3000 job to such a unique car.

I'm sure for ~$3-4k you could pull into Nial's or Peter's and drive out with another 20 years of active suspension life.

Having Peter rebuild my struts was the best thing I've ever done on my car.

in the earlier threads the 6 speed auto is a complicated job meaning the wiring is a headache i should have a diagram up here shortly, basicaly i use my sc400 ecu which piggy backs shift signals onto the sc430 ecu to the transmission ecu which in turn runs the transmission, only a few sensors had to be by passed

Andy, Mate, sorry to be blunt but I think you have missed the point!

Whether or not this is the case, you have never asked what might be a solution to your issue.

You have stated that you wanted to know who can rebuild your suspension as you 32 has a bounce issue but in the same post you said you wanted to "save weight" by replacing the active suspension with coil overs, and you want to "retain the 4WS so it flys around corners"..... WTF!!!

Honestly, any competent mechanic can do the job, it's not that hard as long as they have the information. In saying this, it is not beyond the home enthusiast either! There is plenty of info out there and it does not require specialist tools.

For bounce issue you have mentioned, I would start with replacing the accumulators. Whilst your there, change the seals in the upper section.

All up, including enough fluid for a full flush, about $3K.

The valve body would be the last item I would look at.

Do you have an issue with your power steering pump as well?

I know someone asked how, but send a PM or make your own thread in the transmission section as this conversion does not interest me to say the least, nor can I comprehend why you would go to the trouble?

So Andy, sorry if I seem like an arsehole but s#!t Mate! Send me a PM! I would be more than happy to help with any information, whether via email or over the phone. As you have probably gathered, castrating a 32 is not the best way forward.

I didn't mean to find them, I meant to read some reviews from some of their many unhappy clients.

www.planetsoarer.com Read up on there about the actives.

If you want cheap and easy, get the little valves that are recommended on planetsoarer and recharge the accumulators.

Not a permanent fix, but will get you going for a couple of hundred dollars and just need to regas them every now and then to keep them going until you get around to fitting re-manufactured accumulators.

Hey Cameron,

It has been slow. Been so caught up with work and finding other things on the car that I want to address, like the rat nest under the intake manifold which has lead to getting a new top plate, having the intake manifold modified for individual water injection, the intake plenum remade for a twin throttle body setup, plus other bits and pieces like brake rotors and pads, etc, etc.

The front is done completely and the rear is a work in progress at the moment.

Here are some pics of the left rear strut removal.

Upload

For the rear struts, I decided to split the upper and lower sections whilst on the car.

I used a pipe wrench to undo the upper seal and lower part covering the bump stop and a modified spanner to remove the strut from the accumulator.

Upload

Upload

Upload

Once the halves were split, you can see the random colour of the fluid. The front has fresh fluid throughout. Now I need to get the engine running again to flush the rear.

Upload

After removing the accumulator, I removed the upper seal which allowed the strut and the rest of the internals to come out.

Upload

I'll get some pics up of the front soon (I forgot to take a pic before I put the wheels back on to tighten everything up but I'll have to take them off again as there is not as much room as I remembered under there even on ramps!)

I'm pretty happy with the result and I'm sure the improvement in ride and handling will make me even happier!

Cheers.

Sorry no pics at the moment, I'll get some up of the finished product eventually.

that fluid colour is UV leak testing dye I would say... stick a UV light under there and it will light up like the bed head in a cheap motel.
