I'm getting a set of driveshafts rebuilt at the moment and I've been told that the total cost is $300. At first they wanted $440 but I told them they were supposed to notify me if it was going to be over $200.
Anyway I'm just wondering what is involved in rebuilding them and how much it should cost.

depends how stuffed they are!
can be anything from a clean and new boots to replacing both CV's, then you have after-market or genuine... so basically pull a number out of your bum and double it..

I dropped them off at three yesterday and they were ready this morning which leads to believe that they didn't replace much, probably boots and a regrease. I'll ask them what they did when I pick them up I guess.

Only ever done FWD ones - but you can typically buy them new for less than a couple of hundy each so they often aren't worth reconditioning - guessing the Soarer would be a special case though, like most parts.

Yeah, rear half shafts. The ones coming off the diff.
I'm getting them rebuilt because mine were leaking and I bought a spare set only to find that they were leaking also so I guess it's a common problem with soarers. I didn't believe that they needed to be fully rebuilt, I thought a re grease and new boots would be all they required which is why I'm skeptical about what they have done. That and the fact that they did it so quickly, I mean i doubt that they would have replacement parts on the shelf and it would have taken them more than half a day to get new parts from Toyota but maybe I'm wrong.
Anyway, I guess I'll know a little more when I pick them up.

If a boots split and you haven't noticed straight away, the CV joints are usually buggered a few hundred K's later in my experience. They might be OK for a while, but after a few more thousand, they will start to get noisy. Again, this is with FWD cars, I've not had to replace a half shaft on a RWD before.

If it is a driveshaft place , then they can rebuild them very quickly , or they already have rebuilt ones in stock which they would just exchange yours for . As rare as we like to think soarers are , there actually quite alot in Aus . Also one would think they didnt use something that wasnt used on anything else they ever made .
As long as the splines are not stripped , its just a matter of cleaning out cases replacing / removal and cleaning of bearings , rebooting and regreasing .
Not like you have asked for a set of shafts for a D type jag ;) Hehehe
