To add to the difference between torsen and clutch style diffs, the torsen uses a torque multiplication whereas the clutch style uses clutch plates to transfer torque.
This means that the torsen provides torque to the grippiest wheel based on the grip available at the slipperiest wheel. (Usually around a multiplication factor of 4)
The offshoot of that is that if one wheel is in the air (due to extreme cornering or bumping a ripple strip) then the wheel on the ground recieves no torque (theoretically)
When it lands, there is a shock load through the diff due to the sudden grip on the spinning wheel that is overspeeding. This can sometimes cause failure in a torsen. This is why a clutch pack style diff is better on the track.

Torsens are great for the street though and they are much more forgiving in tight turns.

Except for torsen II. They have a built in preload as well as the torsen guts. :-)

not many sliders here hey! torsens are loose as and really weak, they dont lock up any where near as quickly as a 1.5 or a 2 way,2 ways are good but cause alot of understeer unless the suspension is set up right,1.5 is good for a weekend racer offering good allround performance and much smoother transition when locking up,simple

Would a 4.25 ratio be useable or too short? I believe that's the ratio that the Torsen II comes in.

Actually Torsens react quicker and smoother than clutch type, however they are not quite as strong and dont effectively "lock up" in the way that you need for, say drifting for example.

Brendan, I would have thought the 2-way clutch type differentials would promote oversteer because the rotational speed difference is limited between driving wheels under deceleration. I figured it's probably why drift setups' tend to use them, more effective for (faint?) drifting at high speeds and in tight corners when you can't always rely on power oversteer. Also an advantage when considering swaybar stiffness, less loaded grip needs to be sacrificed to allow easy initiation of slides.

Could be wrong.

Brendan. Do you have a 1.5? If so, where did you get it?
