Can't get the damn tie rod end off. Any tricks people could suggest? Got the castle bolt off no problems, loosened the lock bolt, but the tie rod end will not budge. If i bash it with a hammer any more I think I'll make things worse.

I've heard there is a specialised wedge tool of some sort to do the job?

You need to get the right angle, lift or jack it up a little and just tap it out.

Thanks for the suggestion Daniel. I tried various angles but no luck. I'm actually replacing it with a new one so I might just get the angle grinder on to it.

Its on a taper ,use a puller to remove or (this is hard to explane ),two hammers one each side of the arm were the taper is, hit both sides AT THE SAME TIME will release it sometimes.

+1 for Matt's suggestion - pickle fork has always worked for me and they are cheap as chips - put a bit of grease on the tangs before belting it - helps it move and saves the dust cover (not a problem if you are chucking it away of course). Broke a puller on one once, but it was a cheap one - they are safer if you intend to reuse though.

I got the tool if you want to borrow it.

I'm in Clayton by day, Sunshine by night.

Thanks guys, especially Matchy for his generous offer.

In the end I cut the outer tie rod end in two with a grinder, which released the tension on it and allowed me to hammer it out of the knuckle. Of course, now the inner and outer tie rods are totally seized together...at least this time I have them off the car and can deal with it in a vise.

Use a Pitman Arm Puller for any ball joints on the soarer:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AMPRO-PITMAN-ARM-PULLER-BRAND-NEW-/130432884129?pt=AU_Hand_Tools&hash=ite m1e5e67dda1

Best $55 you will ever spend. Align, Wind and it will crack the ball joint open safely, without damaging anything. All done in 30 seconds.

Forks are a bit of a waste of time in my opinion - sometimes work, sometimes do not work and always a high chance of ruining the seals.

Pitman Arm puller is the way to go!
