G'day everyone
I've just brought myself my first soarer (Lexus sc400) and I'm needing a bit of help regarding the air suspension. The car is currently sitting super low and I can't get it to raise at all! I've checked all the fuses and relays without finding a problem. I've been reading on here about the compressors failing, firstly where is the compressor located?
Can I just test the compressor by hooking power directly to it?
Should I be able to hear the compressor running when I first start the car?
I've also read about the sensors going, where are these sensors and how do I test them?
If anyone knows any other things I should check Your advice would be appreciated.
Sorry for all the silly questions but I have no idea about these cars and I'm hoping you fellas could fill me in.

Check the suspension isolation switch, located inside the boot on the LHS wall

If its a UZZ32 it doesn't have a compressor, it has an oil pump than runs the active suspension.

John, The switch is on
Stephen, accord into the compliance plate its a uzz32, so if it has an oil pump could this possibly fail?
I just traced all the hydraulic lines from the shocks and they go into the oil pump in front of the passenger front wheel behind the bumper, i cant see any leaks on any of the lines. Any suggestions on where i should look to find this problem?
Thanks

I had a problem similar to this and it was a bad connection to the suspension computer (near the fuel computer) on the LHS of the back seat. All I ended up doing was disconnecting the computer and reconnecting it again. It also may be the computer - probably the only way to test this is to try one that is known to work. Good luck.

Lynton, thanks mate I'll check the connection to the computer and see if that fixes it, failing that I'll see if I can possibly borrow one and check it.
Thanks for the info

Hey lynton
I pulled the back seat up today to check that connection but all I can find is the sat nav module, tv tuner amplifiers and radio tuner. Can you please tell me where this computer is so I can check it? Is the fuel computer in the boot?
Thanks

It's not under the seat, it's under the passenger side window, behind the arm rest, behind where the seat belt goes, you need to take that panel off - am I making sense?

This is curious.

UZZ31 is air suspension and has the pump mounted behind the bumper, and the suspension can go flat and collapse.

UZZ32 is hydraulic and has a combined pump with the power steering which is mounted in the engine bay. For all their problems, I don't think I have heard of 32's collapsing.

So, dodgy compliance plate? Dodgy car?

Probably a good idea to check this out in case you have problems with registration/insurance down the track.

Dodgy plates or dodgy car?..... Don't say that it was cheap!
I undid one of the hydraulic lines and red fluid spewed out (power steering fluid?) I'm nearly positive the cars ledgit, because I did a revs check and so far everything seems fine.
Is there a main ecu that controls the suspension, other than the one in the passenger side rear? The relay to that computer 'clicks' so there's power going to it, but is there anywhere I should test power to the suspension computer?
Thanks for your help guys!

Merry Xmas, the fluid is not red, probably a power steering line you cracked. The dipstick is on the left if you are facing the engine for the suspension :-)

Ok Mark, lets ask the question if your car has a rear wheel steering rack or not. If it is a 32 is must have this. If it is a 32, has the suspension system ever been removed replaced? What kind of suspension does it have. It is most unlikely that someone has put a 31 air suspension in a 32, so if it has air suspension with a pump behind the right hand headlight, you have to undo the under guard plastic shield to see the pump, it is not a 32 but a 31 with a 32 plate. Can you check this out, so we know what we are working with. Cheers John

The line I cracked was on top of the front passenger side shock so it wasn't a power steering line, but someone previously may have fill the suspension fluid up with power steering fluid, I don't know.
Ok I will check that later John but I'm not at home with the car presently to check the rear wheel steer. I did pull the front inner guard off and there is what looks like a pump but I don't understand why if it was air suspension, fluid leaked from the line I cracked and there is a resovoir saying ''suspension fluid only''
should you be able to see the airbag at the top of the suspension, if it was the airbag setup?
Sorry for my ignorance guys your being really helpful, merry Christmas all!

Mark, if you look at the front of the rear subframe you will see the steering rack if it has one. Also look under the bonnet and you will see a plastic bottle where the normal break master cylinder would go, not normal booster unit on the 32. There is a plastic bottle near the firewall wall on the left hand side where the ABS is on a 31 if it is a 32. See the picture attached

Mark,

Sounds like the car's hydraulic system has been filled with auto trans fluid - not a good thing. Only genuine Toyota suspension fluid should be used in the 32.

Fluid is purchased in 2.5 litre cans. You will need 6 cans to flush the system, but will first need to drain the reservoir tank.

Also the legs need to be removed to drain the fluid out. They need to be inverted as the fluid does not flow through - one way only. Fluid in the pressure lines need to be flushed, perhaps do this before you remove the legs. All in all quite a big job. Hope this helps.

John, is that pic you kindly attached of a 31 or 32? Because mine is identical under the bonnet, I also jumped under the rear of it and yes it has the 4 wheel steer setup. Sorry everyone for the confusion I caused in my original post about the 'airbags' I now know it is a uzz32 with hydraulic suspension.
Daryl, thank you mate for that, looks like I'll be busy over my holidays flushing out the suspension. Would the suspension even raise with power steering fluid in it, and is it likely to have done any damage to any of the suspension components?
Thanks again, Mark

Well Mark, That underbonnet layout is that of a 32, which you obviously have. If you got it cheap you might just have a gem, Plenty to read on the planet soarer site that Dan posted for you. You and me are on the same learning curve, I just bought one too. Cheers John

Thanks for the link Dan, I'll search through that more in depth when I have the time.
Well atleast I now know I am dealing with a rare animal the uzz32. Id love to get this thing off the ground so I can atleast get it out of my driveway and take it for a run, so if anyone has any other ideas on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Mark
