Hi all, Need some info or advice here. I know most will go from airbags to coils/springs.. but I am trying to do the opposite. my current soarer is on springs. All air lines are still intact. However the pump and solenoids have all been removed. I have gotten some good airbag/struts (8 year old 2nd hand but at a very good price), I've got the suspension ECU, height rods and sensors. I could get hold of solenoids and pumps. However I am stumped/stuck at 2 things. 1) The air lines running out from the pump: I had a look at my old soarer (1991 model, no nitrogen master brake cylinder, sold to friend which had airbags) and compared to my current model ( 1994?? model, has nitrogen master brake cylinder) And found that the airlines position doesnt seem to be the same. Does anyone know more about this?? 2) Electrical lines from the Pump: If I looked at the 1991 model, there are electrical lines that run out from the passenger side at the engine bay to a clip#15, and branch out to a big lump. Most of it goes to the airpump. then another bit goes to other parts. However on my current soarer, it comes out to a clip#10 (much smaller bunch)the big bunch that should go to the pump is missing. There are no signs of wires being cut, or repositioned, or rewrapped with electical tape. So I am wondering what is the go here.... I love the airbags.. didnt think about checking the electrical bit.. thought it is all just getting replacements and plug and play...but given this situation, am wondering if it is easier to leave as it is. The other day changing the airbag strut is my first time getting my hands dirty with the car... and it was fun... I am prepared to work on the car but need info as to whether it is a feasible (even if it may take a long while), or impossible... Cheers

There is no doubt a "good" airbag system is great to drive on. Have driven Peters late UZZ31, and it was excellent(only genuine low ks) But, a worn system is not so good. And most fall into this catagory. I find its not the airbags that are the problem, its the worn out shocker system in the strut that causes most of the drama, and bad ride quality. Unfortunately new struts are a bit out of the price range of most of us. But, best of luck with the challenge ahead.

Might have to get wiring giagrams of a 94-91 and compare. Maybe you can rewire the 94 into the 91 pump? Maybe there was a revision of solinoids or something so less wires?

Hey Am just doing my airbags with S/H replacements. Did the fronts for the first time the other day. Thought I might have trouble what with the manual saying to undo the top steering knuckle and use special tool blah blah to remove the ball joint, but did not have to as you can get the front strut out if you compress the shocker first then quickly jiggle it out over the top control arm. Not as hard as I thought really and job went well. What was a hassle later was adjusting the height rod. The plastic cover is secured with these pissy little phillips screws and the heads strip because the thread has been caked in mega tar and sh*t for years. It was a contortion act to get to the top lock nut. But like Allen said, 'anythings possible' and when your underneath the car, and you've been having fun for three hours but you now want to finish, it's amazing how tenacious you get. The rear bags are a breeze compared to the fronts BTW. Sorry cant help you with the electrics. Good luck with it.

Jack, I have just replaced my airbags with brand new units. The shockers are gas filled, I could not compress the new struts with my body weight. The old rear units compressed under their own weight - no gas left in the shockers - completely stuffed!, one front was like new, one compressed under my weight. The new struts were not easy to get in but worth the effort, massive improvement in how the car rides and handles.

Jan, how much did the new airbags cost, and who did you purchase them from?

I purchased them from marty.burnside@rbond.toyota.co.nz and they cost me about $3000.00. Best to contact Marty and get a current price, remember $1Aus is about $1.20NZ at the moment.

That seems to be a reasonable price. A new set of fronts 4 years ago, were $1500NZ. These were old stock. Last in the country. Priced a set of rears 3 years ago, were $2000NZ landed in NZ. These retailed at $2100 each back then. (Prices were from Rutherford and Bond Toyota NZ) Do Castle Hill Toyota still do them for $875AUD each? With your Aussie Dollar being very strong, You can get your parts at good prices if using R&B, Amayama, driftmotion etc.

Hi All, Sorry for not following this thread for a while.... Things have changed abit over my side.... long story.. but I have been a naughty boy... So I have had this v8 as above, wanted to do the springs back to airbags.... but being a P plater, I cannot be driving this for another 2 years.... and after a few days of looking around, and looking at the car, plus got some parts for it, we (me and my mate) realised that it is really really going to be too much effort (esp I have pretty zero knowledge on electrics, soldering, taking apart cars etc).... That being said, we did have some fun ourselves... My profile pic v8 has been sold to my mate and it is on airbags... his left side popped and he ordered in 2 new ones from the UK. Think including shipping, it cost him AUD$1350 (including shipping). CastleHill Toyota quoted me $750 per strut $22Frieght. I myself paid $300 for 4 airbag struts off someone in sydney selling on ebay after he converted his to springs.. his right front was dead, working left front, and both rears were replaced with new ones 2 years ago so I think it was a bargain...(This was when I wanted to do the conversion...).. in the end, we tested out swapping in my mate's deflated left front airbag with the one I bought... took us a good 5 hour feeling ourway around with some good info found on SC .... It worked... almost striping that screw nut for the airhose.... Anyway, with this white v8 I had, I have now sold it off to another mate of mine.... I found an SC300 with a 2jz-GE... which means I can drive it rather than wait for 2 years.... Maybe in 2 years time I might source for a v8 (love that note... even though some say it is a boat compared to the TTs.)... So all in, at some point last year, I had 3 soarers under my name... now left 1.... have got tt brakes set, 2nd hand rims, new tyres, coilovers to be put in..... Body panels on the sc300 needed some work and respray to bring it back to decent glory... I love my soarers... and Love the leather seats and sunroof.... plus body kit... which is all in the sc300... bar the power, which I can live with hahaha... only thing lacking is the grunt of the v8 exhaust note

From my experience the speed of a v8 and 2j ge was quite comparable. 2j is always quicker off the go

True you would but for the first maybe 20-50m the jzz31 is the quickest Soarer. I think because it's lightest doesn't have lag etc. I've heard the v8 is ok if you manually shift

$3000 for four is a decent price. I got a quote from Amayama a few weeks ago and it was $900 each ($3600) not including shipping or GST.
