I did a trip to Dubbo and return on the w/e from Sydney. Noticed quite an annoying shudder in the steering wheel over stretches of road surface in poor condition. On good surfaces there is no vibration at all. I have replaced the lower suspension bushes with the rubber Vlamos bushes, also the roll bar bushes, and the upper steering rack bush (also supplied by Vlamos). The car is running 235/45/17 tyres at 36 psi cold and has had a wheel alignment recently. Any thoughts on where I should be looking to correct this? Thanks

i have the same problem and have been pointed in the same direction. i have aftermarket wheels and the wheel does not fit on nice and snug like it should so i got spigot rings/centering caps and around town driving has improved alot. am yet to try the dodgy country roads. mechanic said rings set me back $6 and freight was $16. if yo have the same situation it may be worth looking at this possibillity before forking out $4000 on new shockies.

I have spiggot rings already. I was looking at the steering column today - there seems to be some significant up and down movement in the column where it passes through the firewall. Not sure if this is significant.

Kris, I replaced the other bush on the steering rack (the large one that goes right around the tube of the rack), and this seems to have made an improvement round town. I haven't been out of town with it yet though, so not sure how it will feel on country roads. Murray

I had a balance a couple of days ago and the difference is unbelievable. An alignment by itself isn't enough to fix the shuddering problem. I was ready to replace the bushes and maybe shocks but a simple balance for about 10 bucks a tyre (also 17s) was all it took.

I finally got round to solving my steering wheel shudder over rough surfaces. Upon examination the LHF shock was leaking fluid. It was also significantly softer than the RH side which had been replaced 2 years ago after the air bag started leaking. The shock also made a wheezing sound when the suspension was bounced up and down. Installed a new strut today and problem solved.

Brett, Castle Hill Toyota in Sydney has UZZ31 Soarer struts for $885. Seems about the going rate. (James Sloane, they guy who works there and looks after the grey import side of things, says the list price is more like $1300) Pricey, but money well spent.

800-1300ea! wow! i had no idea they cost that much! that sort of cash will get you some really REALLY nice fully adjustable, custom-valved mono-tube coilovers. drummond, bilstein, whiteline, koni... hell probably even ohlins or jrz shocks... would be available at that cash and i am prepared to bet that they'd outperform the standard air struts no problems.... of course you'll do away with the cool airbag features but my god would your car handle!!!! they wouldn't necessarily be jiggly, stiff or uncomfortable contrary to what is usually associated with "coilovers".
perhaps worth considering???
