I know i sound stupid but i have read all the other threads and still don't get it. What do i have to do to put a LSD into my car? I have a 1991 auto tt and I've broken my diff and thought id really like an LSD. is this possible for my car, if so what do i have to do and how much does it cost. I have looked at this TRD centre (6/91 ~ . For models ~8/96 equipped with factory torsen LSD, side shafts (41309-24020) are required.) would this work??? Thankyou.

If you get the entire housing, it will just swap straight over. If it's just the center, it can get a little tricky. Some people say swapping the centers is an easy job, others won't go near it with a barge pole. You'll be looking at around $450-$600 for someone to do it for you (remove diff, fit new center and refit diff) so factor that into it if you can't do it yourself as it might be cheaper to just get a whole housing. Speaking of which, I MAY be able to get cusco lsd's for around the $1500 mark if I play my cards right...

You will need to find either a soarer torsen lsd or a jza80 supra (not TT manual if it a supra) torsen lsd and have that put in your car. You can get either a complete swapover unit or a centre only and have that installed in your original housing.
You probably don't want an aftermarket (TRD, KAAZ, Cusco etc) diff because they are really a competition item and are difficult to tolerate on the street- clunky and noisy and require re shimming quite regularly to keep performing properly.
Not sure on pricing over there, best bet would be to check out the for sale section and the sponsors' section, but be quick because they're rare and VERY sought after.

I have heard lots of australians who say the TRD diff makes the car noisy and less driveable. I have heard lots of other people say they are the best single traction mod you can do! Plenty of people who HAVE the trd lsd say it is in fact silent operation. Some say the oil you use makes a big difference.
Personally i think it would cost quite a bit even for a second hand AO2B, so you may as well get a brand spanking new TRD centre for the same sort of money, which has far superior LSD properties since its based on clutch plates rather than wurm gears.

Australian!!?? you take that back!!
Mechanical vs Torsen is very much a "each to their own" situation. From what I've experienced, a nice, tight mechanical LSD is not far off being as uncivilised as a "cig" locker. Then there are people who say that a locker isn't THAT unstreetable, its only a bit hairy during parking etc! And yes, it is possible to add friction modifying additives to the diff oil to make them less snatchy, but they're still relativly harsh for street use.
I would have thought that a Torsen was the ideal street diff, you wouldn't know it was there normally, but it reacts instantly and drives both wheels, and doesn't wear out or require maintenance. Someone from you link said:
"The stock type LSD is neither use nor ornament, to be frank."
Which I don't think is an accurate assessment. Perhaps he was talking about track use or offroading, but I reckon the torsen in my Soarer is superb, easily the best diff Ive had in any of my cars.
I'm under the impression that you can buy torsen centres for $850ish (vs $1500 for a trd, kaaz, cusco etc) and a whole, bolt in assembly for perhaps $1100.
I personally think that coming from a open centre, and now thinking of upgrading to a LSD in an otherwise fairly standard car, Torsen is the only way to go.

I got those prices straight out of the FOR SALE section on this very site. Being from Auckland, price and availability is quite different over here. I don't know if you can put it in yourself, if its the whole housing, then perhaps, but if you have to ask then perhaps not. Its fairly heavy, you'll need a good 12mm hex key and set of tools, axle stands, jack etc.
You say you've been drifting it? on a single spinner? really? Anyway, I did a drift practise day in mine with a torsen and found that it performed very nicely. A clutch type would probably have been better, but I was happy with how it handled itself on the track. let us know what you decide and how you get on with it! Good luck

i'm a lil confused... if you have a standard single spinner, and want to put in a lsd centre. You can buy the standard torsen lsd centre for say $800 and then spend the $650 or so to get it put in, is that all you need? I've just heard that you need some extra parts(side shafts etc)to make it fit, or is that only when fitting an aftermarket centre (TRD, KAAZ etc) and not the factory torsen...sorry i'm just having a slow day i think LOL
