gregg, i work for a tyre fitter. I can say that 38 psi is a acceptable pressure. For a profile that size when fitting them we would usually put about 38-40psi. The tyres arent sealed as such on the rims when fitted. The pressure in the tyre seals it to the rim. The only way that it could of been the tyre fitters fault is if the tyre didnt seat properly (which is very easy to see). Even if it wasn't seated properly it would seat itself with the weight of the car. It is highly unlikely that the tyre wasn't seated properly. Other than that they may have damaged the tyre when fitting it, which can be easily done with low profile tyres. They would of been aware of this if they had done it. If your having constant problems with loosing pressure from around the bead (where the tyre meets the rims) its probably a good idea to have the tyres taken off and the inside of the rim cleaned or looked at. They can often build up with old rubber, or rust, dirt etc. Or it may have damage to the tyre or rim preventing it from sealing properly. You can quite easily see if there is a problem with the bead by dunking the whole tyre under water in a tank. If the bead isnt sealing properly it will be constantly going flat. And yes if the tyre is running flat the sidewall will chew out. You can see this quite easily by looking at the sidewall of the tyre as it starts to get a different appearance to it. It will keep chewing untill the sidewall does rupture and thus your blowouts.

But apart from punctures make sure there is no rubbing of the tyres with any of the suspension parts or body of the car. If on the front also make sure there is plenty of clearance with the wheels at full lock. Also make sure the load rating on the tyre is correct. If your running 93's and should have 94's it still shouldnt blow out on you. You can usually get away with a little leeway, though technically this is not the best and should try and match the load rating. Its also illegal from a legallity point of view.

Nankangs are a cheaper brand of tyre, but they still meet design specifications and shouldnt have any problems whatsoever with them failing under load. They should hold up just as well as an expensive brand of the same load rating. Also check your rims are the right width? For 265's you should have about ~ 9"

All in all i would just monitor the pressures regularly and see if they are going down and make sure you keep plenty of air in them. If they are going down a lot get a tyre fitter to look at them and fix the problem. Also keep an eye out for any sidewall fractures (weakspots), these will be pretty obvious and will look like an egg on the side of the tyre. Not very common by will also result in blowouts. If you do this you will be pretty right.

The Kumho Ecsta are a good tyre. I run them in 235/35/19 on my soarer and have had no problems. In the dry they are very good, good for launches etc. In the wet - not the greatest, but the traction in the dry makes up for it.

Definantly recommend them, will buy them next time, I'm pretty sure they're worth $250 a piece for the 19" variety.

Cheers Nathan - The sealing issue was relative to potential issues around the edge of the tyre as you say. It's probable from what they told me that it was not cleaned down properly prior to fitting. The rims are not very old and in "as new" condition so corrosion etc doesn't come into it.

The weights used however were ones that tucked into the tyres which apparently shouldn't have been used. Regardless there was definate leakage around the edge of the rim. The tyre fitter does have a special sealant that they use to assure a good seal on 18's and above - he showed me the sealant.

Also you can't see the sidewall failing easily as in all cases the inside sidewall fails only. The outside looks perfect. With 19's you can't see a difference in appearance anyway. Even when the tyre is flat it's hard to see that it actually is flat - I'm sure you know what I mean.

There is no rubbing on any suspension or the body of the car - this was checked carefully last time and all my guards are rolled. Fronts under full lock (and going down hill) clear perfectly. Load ratings are correct. 265's are indeed correct for my 9" rims and is what I had on.

You won't see weak spots or sidewall fractures on these 19's, it's an inch of rubber at best and again in all cases the outside wall was perfect.

I'm still sus about Nankangs regardless however I feel it is a combination of pressure loss and inability for the tyre to hold. The other tyre did indeed have a nail hole init so from that perspective it may very well have been some bazaar coincidence. I have no need to doubt the tyre guy he has not direct loyalty to Nangkang.

I bought a set of Kumho Ecsta's (before I read the suggestions here!)..so we'll see how it goes and obviously I'll be keeping a very close eye on pressures....

Cheers for your thoughts.

ps: I thought it was odd that at the Melbourne AutoSalon there was a massive Nangkang Display tent setup..yet it was completely empty for the entire weekend!...Perhaps they knew I was coming or perhaps all their stock is F#$Ked...

Yeah good point about the profile of the tyre mate, they would look some what like gaffa tape wrapped around the rim. Didn't really think much about that when i wrote the post at 3am.

I'll have to check out that sealant you speak of. At first i tought you probably mistook the lubricant they use as sealant (a lot of people do). I know personally we never use it at our shop and have never come across any problems. But, yeah interesting none the less. Im just work there two or three times a week, so im sure there are bits and pieces i havent come across yet.

But i do agree with you in general nankangs arent one of the better tyres out there. You should be far happier with the kuhmos.

Good luck with the new tyres mate. hope you dont have anymore issues. I dont think there is anything more irritating.

Well, when my car was in getting a Stage 1.5 shift kit fitted by Neil, he discovered one of my tyres had split along the inner sidewall! Very nasty. So I guess chalk another one down for me, running 235/35/19 Kumho Ecstasa.

On the other hand, shift kit is good fun :-) :-) :-)
