Does anyone know, or is there a way to work out, the limits of what rim width with what offset will fit under standard guards without scrubbing?

For example 9.5" with +40, or 10" with +50 etc. (These are only guesses)

For Front and Rear please, if possible.
Thanks

Don't know if anyone has done this before.

I will say that rears 10" wide with +50 offset will clear everything. Mine are +45 offset and ever so slightly rub the plastic lip on the guard if I lower the car far enough. 5mm more offset would solve the problem perfectly.

Fronts 8.5" wide and +38 offset will scrub pretty hardcore if you're too low.

Chris,

I just got a new set of rims on the weekend, mine are as follows,

Front: 18 x 8.5 38+ offset, tyres are 235/40/18, my car is quite low at the front as well, they do scrub at full lock, normal driving no scrubbing at all, not even going over speed humps.

Rear: 18 x 9.5 45+ offset, tyres are 265/35/18, car is a little raised at the rear, no scrubbing at all, plenty of clearance from coil over to tyre, although will be lowering in rear soon and guards front and rear will need to be lipped.

Used to have front and rear 19 x 8, tyres were 235/30/19 and I hated it mate, with tyres as thick as elastic bands, the thing used to tramline very badly and the ride was horrible, also used to rub in the front guard at full lock. Either way, I dont think you will get away with rubbing from a 18" rim and higher if your car is lowered.

Search is your friend.

I have covered this in detail 6 or 7 times over the years.

In short.

Front. 8.5" rim @ +48 - +50 offset with 245/40-18
Rear. 10.5" rim @ +45 - +46 offset with 275/35-18

You can go to a 10.5 rear @ +52mm offset and get a 285/35-18 under there but not on a UZZ31 airbag car. All others, this will fit.

I'm running 9" fronts, 10" rears, both 50 offset with a set of Ventus 275/35/ZR18 Sport K104 front and Hankook 295/30/ZR18 Ventos S1 evo rears and will try 305's on the rear next. But I did have the inside of the rear guards rolled as a precaution. See

Thanks for the info guys.

Tried the magical search, but obviously wasn't searching for the right thing. I'll have to try, try again.

Chris, something else to consider - not all tires have the same side profiles. Meaning, I maybe able to use a Hankook 295/30/ZR18 Ventos S1 evo ok, yet if I swapped to another brand tire at 295/30/ZR18, it may rub.

Also have a read in the "Wheels and tires" section. Excellent website -
http://www.intellexual.net/faq.html
I quote ....
"WHEELS & TIRES: When shopping for new wheels, take note of the wheel diameter, wheel width, bolt pattern, and wheel offset. Both SC coupes' bolt patterns are 114.3 x 5, stud design, with 12 x 1.5 threading and 60.1 bore. The stock offsets are +50mm. With larger and wider wheels some rubbing may occur on the fender lip or wheel well covers. This rubbing usually occurs when turning the front wheels all the way out or when the suspension bottoms out. Rubbing is attributed to several factors including: the drop height of the suspension, size of the tire sidewall, tire & wheel widths, and the wheel offset. The simple way of resolving a rubbing issue is by softly rolling the fender lip into a sharp wedge or shaving/lifting the wheel well covers where the rubbing occurs.

The largest wheel size that fits the SC wheel wells are 20"x9" in the front and 20"x10" in the rear. 19" wheels and below will fit the SC without rubbing issues in any assortment of wheel widths under 10 inches given the proper offset and tires. The widest tires ever attempted on the SC coupe are 275/30-ZR20 on a 20"x10" rim, 295/30ZR19 on a 19x11" rim, 295/35-ZR18 on an 18"x11" rim, and 315/35-ZR17 on a 17"x9.5" rim. All fitments were reported to work on the rear axles with no rubbing issues.

Below is a chart of tire sizes that are compatible with the SC and offer the similar outside diameters. Outside diameter is critical to maintain for the proper functioning of the anti-lock brakes, speedometer, and odometer instruments. These are just some of the tire sizes that fellow ClubLexus members are using on their cars. Some values are expressed as ranges of sizes. No size advertised below guarantees a perfect outside diameter match, it is recommended that you perform outside diameter calculations to ensure the tire is a good match. See more details below the chart... "

Thanks Blaine, I'll have a read.

How do you find driving with such large tyres on the front? It says on your website that you are "used to them", was it more getting used to the change from smaller tyres, or do they still cause a little grief?

Chris, if I had a second chance, I would order 8" rims for the front and run either 235 or try 245's. 275's on the front look great, brake fantastic, but tramline so you always have to be aware of the situation, and of course make the ride a little rougher.

So in short, yes they "still cause a little grief" on poor road surfaces, but I know it's coming so there are no nasty surprises, or over- corrections on my behalf. It is not uncommon for the car to "move" 1/2 a meter to track where ever it chooses on it's own.

He's getting a set of wagon wheels for his Soarer as he enjoys having his teeth rattled out by every bump in the road, but wants to make sure the rubber bands that will be wrapped around them don't scrub on the guards and snap.

Reading this, and other threads on the subject, there seems to be general agreement that up to 275/35-18 should fit in the rear, even if the offset is +45...

However, on my car, this doesn't seem to be the case: The tire sticks out under the wheel arch, and as I believe the wheel would move almost directly vertically under suspension movement, it would almsot certainly hit the guard sooner or later...

Am I missing something? The rim is only 9" wide, but I don't think a, say, 9.5" rim with the same tyre would change anything...

Does anyone know

a) which exact path the suspension would move through? Eg, straight up, inwards and up, negative camber and up?

b) how much 'extra' clearance I would get by removing the wheel arch protective/decorative bit of plastic?

I'd love to keep the tyres, but need to make sure the suspension can move the wheels around without risk...
