Ok, I just got back from a consultation with MV Automatics and it was pointed out to me that my front radial rod bushes are worn and need replacing. I've been reading some of the old posts and I'm guessing that the front
http://www.vftbushes.com/ bushes are a suitable replacement part. I'm getting toyota to look at it but am not sure how much they are going to quote.

So anyway, my questions are:

1) am I right assuming that the vft bushes will be suitable?
2) anyone know of anywhere in adelaide I can get it done?
3) how much do you think I'm up for in total?

appreciate any input.

Cheers
-ash

Ahh thanks. I just PM'd him.

I'd prefer not to pay toyota an absolute fortune to do it. I guess I will if I have to though... don't want the wheel to fall off and clean up some un suspecting person at the bus stop I'm trying to spray with water!

Thanks Peter. I'll give him a call tomorrow.

Did you supply your own bushes from
http://vftbushes.com/? How much did it cost you?

I'm thinking i should get the steering ones done at the same time...

So I'm best off getting all the front ones as well as the steering ones at the same time?

Front lower - $330
Front Upper - $270
Steering - $55
Large Rack Grommet - $50
4x Sway bar Bushes - $80??

Hmm I wonder how much labor that is?

Thanks Ben!

Peter - How much labor did Manta want. They quoted me today for installation of the front uppers, lowers and steering at $726 + $56 for a wheel alignment! Sounds HUGE.

And whats this about the sway bar bushes and where do I get them?

Hmm this looks to be a VERY costly exercise.

Am I right in assuming that I should be doing the Toyota Large Rack Grommet and four Toyota roll bar bushes at the same time?

Anyone got any part numbers cause that would help me a lot.

Ashley, I think the front lowers are the hardest to fit, I had those and steering done a couple of years ago, so I can't help with the labour cost.

Most people just have the front lowers and steering rack bushes done initially, as they are the ones that suffer the most. Sway bar bushes are simple and you can either do them yourself or they shouldn't add much to the cost if you are paying someone else.

Have a look in the Basic Maintenance section to see what is involved.

However, if you want that New Car ride, then replace all the front and rear control arm bushes and be done with it. Nice! :-)

Hmm yeah I'm considering biting the bullet and just getting it all done. I kind of only wanted to do the Fronts though. Getting a whole set (all front and rear) is a fair whack of cash. If the backs don't need doing for a while I'll avoid it if I can.

If I could actually have talked to Steve that would have helped. I just got stuck with the receptionist and I think there was some confusion in what I was asking for.

Might try the sway bars myself. Don't mind getting into the car if you know what I mean. I suppose I could always leave the Front uppers, only assuming that they aren't stuffed.

So what's the Large Rack Grommet do?

Also the front wheel jolts when in reverse and you back off the brake. That's the lowers causing this isn't it?

Ashley, talking to Steve is a good idea. Keep in mind that he is often busy however, and if he is in the middle of something tricky, having to put down tools and wash his hands to take a phone call can be a fair inconvenience. The same applies to all mechanics, I am sure that Neil would agree.

Best bet might be so simply ask if he could call you back at a time when it is convenient for him. I am sure he won't mind.

Steve has done bushes on a few Soarers now, so I am sure he can be quite specific on the pricing once he knows which bushes you want replaced.

The rack grommet holds the steering rack in place - important job.

The lowers can cause the symptom you describe.

Ashley, I replaced all my bushes last year. But if price is a limiting factor, my experience was that the front lowers and the rear uppers were the ones that were really shot. The others could actually have lasted quite a bit longer. And I've read elsewhere that this is what many people find.

Yes, I can understand that he would be busy. His services are in high demand, I'm sure for good reason.

I'll call back on Tuesday and ask him to give me a quick buzz if he can and I'll book it in. If I can get hold of Andrew to send me the parts. (can't seem to get through on his mobile today)

Looks like I might have a crack at the sway bar bushes myself. Does the rear have a sway bar and should I be replacing that as well?

So just to clarify what I'll be up for just to do the front for now:
Front lower bushes- $330
Front Upper bushes- $270
Steering bushes- $55
Toyo Large Rack Grommet - $50 (part number anyone??)
Toyo 2x Sway Bar Bushes - $40?? (part number: 48815-24051)

There are also rear sway bushes, slightly easier to replace as you don't have to remove the under engine tray. Similar price to the fronts, but a different part number. I didn't take pics when I did them as I was in a hurry and it was around midnight and cold at the time :-)

The main reason for changing the sway bar bushes is to cure squeaking when they are cold. The rubber gets a bit hard with age, but the bushes don't deteriorate like the CA bushes. My old fronts were slightly squashed, but the rears actually looked OK. You could easily leave that job for later if you wanted to unless they are squeaking.

Ok excellent. I'm well on my way now.
I'll order the parts in tomorrow and hopefully get the entire front end done in the next two weeks or so. I'm looking forward to it!

Thanks everyone for your input and help. I'll keep you updated on how things go.

I can't seem to get hold of Andrew. I sent an email, got a response from another Andrew Jnr. (his son?) which I think there was some confusion so I emailed back.

No response... Is Andrew overseas?
Anyone know how I can get get in contact with him or when he'll be back. The Mobile # doesn't seem to work.

Ahh awesome. He's gotten back to me. Just about to send the $$$ now.

I spoke to Steve at Manta as well. Seems he was quoting me for the entire car (front and rear). Revised his quote at a much more affordable $450 for the front end. Even though I'll probably be back there in 3-4 weeks time getting the rears done as well. :-D

Thanks for that. Hopefully get it all sorted out. I'll be putting in the front sway bar bushes on Sunday, if my parts are in tomorrow like the promise.

Well the parts are in. Which is good, means I'm doing the sway bars on sunday for sure now.

It's not the service guys that I don't like. It's the receptionist, she really makes is clear that they don't want to touch a "fully imported car".

dum.
