Ok, after talking to Peter today and doing a quick investigation when I got home there is a rather loud clunk coming from the rear of the car when I shift from Reverse to Drive, and to a much lesser extent the other way.
It's been there since I bought the car and I'd really like to know what causing it. Anyone got any ideas?
I changed the diff oil last weekend and it was VERY clean, no chips a fair bit of silt though.

Mine does this when the brake pads are cold. It's just the sound of the pad against the disc as the car wants to lurch forward but it can feel suspiciously like the diff. Depressing the brakes a few times after startup helps or applying more pressure when you shift from reverse to drive.

**update**
finally got around to getting the car over a pit. Oh an low and behold it actually looks like it's coming from the rear bushes, must be a little too much movement in there. I've only had the front ones changed. So I'm planning on doing the rear sway bars ASAP and early next year get the rest of the bushes done.

Yeah, I've re-set the gear box and it will be serviced in Jan when the shift kit is fitted with trans cooler. Will replace bushes and if it's still not fixed... oh well I wanted a T2 LSD anyway so I'll head down that path.
Ok just that, serpentine belt, engine shims, ride height controller and then a super charger and I'm done... until I need a new engine.
