Hi guys,
My dad's manual camry has developed a problem. It is hard to shift from first to second and it doesn't shift out of 5th properly (requires considerable force and usually a second atempt to get it into neutral). It also has a jolt in the shifter(it moves about 10mm) when in 5th when you release and apply power.
The car has been taken to a trusted mechanic who thinks the problem is terminal. He said it is likely that something has come loose and there is about 1mm movement in the final drive shaft. He thinks that through the linkages this movement is amplified to the jolt in the shifter.
I am not sure if that is correct, he second piece of advice is what I don't agree with. He said to drive it until it blows up the replace the box instead of pulling it down to repair it.
The labour to pull it out of the car and reinstall it is at least a two day job with additional time required for repair. As he is unsure as to what is not quite right how long the repair will take is unknown.
The car was taken to another mechanic who also said it doesn't look good but he was unsure what the problem was, he said there might not be a major problem but only time will tell.
My first thought is to change the fluid. There have been suggestions here the Redline fluid is great for soarer manuals, what would be best suited for a camry manual.
I did a search and I came up with redline lightweight and shockweight. There was also suggestions that the shockweight has destroyed gear boxes. Is this true, given this box isn't looking that great would it be advisable to use shockweight. I have read that it is the best fluid for a sticking gearbox which should help getting it out of 5th gear but what about the jolt.
What would you recommend,
Thanks
Damian
