Hi guys, I just finished installing a JZZ30 specific R154(1993)in my Soarer and its a totally different beast now. The box came with a used TRD clutch with a metal faced clutch disk. The problem I`m having is that when I ride the clutch say when parking or during a hill start, it makes this horrible metal grinding sound and makes the whole car shake.(can`t be the release bearing cos that`s new) I was told that the TRD metal clutch disks made a bit of a racket but the car as it is isn`t very street drivable. I`m hoping someone could advice me on weather a new metal clutch disk may ease the situation, or if possible replace the metal one with a stock Toyota R154 disk(keeping the rest of the TRD clutch components). Another problem is my speedo readings, which have become erratic...will replacing the speed sensor fix this or could it be some other problem? Anyways, appreciate any advice you may have...

Heh, my experience with brass button clutches is that they are noisy, and not very nice to engage. Compared to most organic clutches they are an on/off button rather than something you can feather to get going. EDIT: This is after experiencing one on an RX-7 with a lightened flywheel and poorly setup pedal and cylinders.

Sorry, but I can't help you with your query on the speed sensor.

The TRD Clutch is a 3puk Clutch.

So its quite harsh.

Basically you just gotta learn how to drive it. You cant really ride the clutch you got sorta pop the clutch off and not ride it.

I have a Brass Button Clutch at the moment and i get the exact some noise you are getting when reversing or doing a hill start if i ride the clutch, i try my best not to ride the clutch (for example westfields is the biggest pain in the arse to get up if there is traffic and you stop half way up the hill, its hard not to get that grinding noise)

Ive had the clutch for about 3mths now and i still find it abit difficult.

You will also notice alot of shuddering on downshifting and upshifting if you dont keep the rpms up. So the shuddering is normal.

The noise you mentioned about the metal grinding. Should go away if you dont ride the clutch.

So if you get sick of driving it like that and dont plan on running more than 230rwkw. Id go for the standard toyota clutch disk. Its very very nice compared to a brass buton clutch. It can handle around 230rwkw. 230Rwkw is a rough guide aswell, it could handle abit more? or abit less?

Ive thought about going back to a standard clutch disk, but i couldnt be bothered ive spent to much money finding the right clutch setup as it is, and eventually plan on running around 270rwkw.

What Shane and Tim said.

I had a 5 puck sprung centre and lightened flywheel in my Rx-7. I really had to relearn how to drive it. Once I got used to it it was great to drive and pretty much unbreakable. Several years of drag and circuit racing on top of daily driving duties and it is still going strong.

The down side is that everyone else hated it. The wife only drove it as a last resort. Each time I dropped it off for work I had to suffer through the tradie carefully stalling the car 8, 9, 10 times in the workshop. People actually rang me and told me my car had a faulty clutch!

The Soarer is going to be a much nicer compromise and a lot less brutal than the Rx-7. Thats why I went with a Jim Berry clutch. Unfortunately the wife enjoys driving the Soarer.

Cheers guys...I`ll give it a bit more thought...I love the fact that this clutch can handle heaps of power, but I do live in Japan and this is the traffic light capital of the world...

Hey mate

If it was a used clutch and it shudders under load did you get the flywheel or the TRD pressure plate surfaces ground down? if there is any high spots you will get clutch shudder and it isn’t nice at all you might want to pull it out and get the pressure plate rebuilt and flywheel ground :-)

I am about to do the same thing with my 1992 soarer I have a R154 non remote shift box I was wondering what box you used? Also if you have any pics I would love to have a look mate? Would really be lots of help!

Thanks
David Smith.

Hi David,
Bro I didn`t get anything you described done...I`m hopeless mate.. I got the transplant done at a local tunning garage cos I just don`t have the time these days. The guy there says that the clutch is fine..besides, it only shudders when I ride it not under acceleration. As far as rebuilding and grinding goes, it`s gonna cost as much as new parts.. Japanese labour bro..so, I`ve decided to fit a stock clutch setup..not very happy about it, but that`s the only way I can use the car to get to and from work(now driving the wife`s 660cc...).. as you seem to know a bit about clutches, do you think I might be able to replace the TRD metal clutch disk with a stock organic disk(keeping the TRD pressure plate)? My guy here doesn`t seem to know...
Excuse the ignorance, but what`s a non remote shift box? The one I have is a standard Soarer R154. Although my engine is a 2JZ-GTE, everything just bolted right on...there was even a hole for the shift lever to come through, so no modification at all...however if the 154 is not a Soarer specific, your gear lever will be sticking out the wrong place mate ...anyways, if you do run into any problems while doing the transplant, drop me a line and I`ll help anyway I can...
