Hey guys I am going to do a manual conversion on my jzz30 with the help from a good mate Thads, he is on these forums somewhere, he has given me all the technical know how and is the one that has passed on most of the info, I am going to take pics all the way through just so everyone can have a go if they want, I couldn’t find any threads on this with pics etc so here goes

Parts inc.

• R154 Gearbox (We have the one without remote shift out of a Toyota Cresta Jzx90)
• Clutch master and slave cylinder
• Clutch hydraulic hard and flexi line
• Flywheel with bolts
• Clutch Friction disk (We have chosen a standard one for the car to see how she runs fist)
• Clutch Pressure plate with bolts (We have a TRD Plate Came with the kit)
• Clutch peddle box with all peddles and pins etc (could not find one for a Soarer so I went Toyota and I brought the genuine one cost approx $430 for the hole unit)
• Manual R154 Prop shaft
• Manual Center console Trim (also got this from Toyota approx $75)
• Manual Starter Motor

This is after I got the car off the ground just took the wheels off and removed the exhaust we have a aftermarket exhaust so it was quite easy. Next I removed the front part of the prop shaft, the one off the car is at the bottom (in the picture below). The new one off a jzx90 Cresta is bigger and flange is different at gearbox side and is at the top of the picture.

I haven’t done too much more tonight, it got too late. Will be updating after this weekend as will have removed old auto and will start piecing the rest together.

Also very advisable to replace your rear main seal (it's the seal around the crank in the block)

Hmm, there should be a thread lying around somewhere when I did the same thing 3 years ago. Shows all the important bits. If you get stuck, you should hunt it down.

I did a manual conversion on my Supra a while back and made a step by step guide which should be fairly similar to a Soarer...

Once I finally get round to doing the conversion in the Soarer if it's ever going to happen I'll make a guide for that as well.

http://soarer.net.nz/Technical/ManualConversion.htm

Good luck!! Thads is a good man, has allot of knowledge.

Sorry mate wasn’t looking for a post called soarer sex change for manual conversion lol :-) good on ya mate I bet it changed the car for the best!! nice :-)

so far I have got the old box out and cleaned all the back part of the block it was very dirty the oil had turned to slug :-) replaced the rear main seal, was very easy to remove the auto only a couple of hard bits the trans cooler line's and the kick down cable thought it was the Speedo cable (haha silly me I rang thads and he quickly told me it was the kick down cable and how to remove it! Removing the converter bolts is very easy. To take measurement from the auto cross member to the center of the output shaft of the auto to find the right height of the manual box. Will put pics up later on.

Buy new flywheel bolts don’t use second hand ones

I’d just like to say for those in nz looking for a kit ring Totally Toyota in New Plymouth New Zealand 06 – 753 4500 those guys are very helpful.

just came to a little speed bump :-( the auto xmember doesn’t fit so will have to get the mount moded and need to goose neck the shifter to make it fit will have pic's etc as soon as I find out what’s happening

Also just cut out the trans tunnel to fit the shifter in and sized up the drive shaft 454mm from back of R154 box to center hanger

My box came with a manual crossmember. From memory it mounts somewhat "opposite" to the auto version. The arms either swing rearward instead of forward, or vice versa. The bolt holes should still be there in the chassis however to accomodate the new member.

Xmembers are identical.

Auto & Man mounts are different..

Manual mount is cheaper than auto one new..

DON"T mod anything..buy the parts..

Only thing that needs moding in the whole job is the driveshaft and wireing.

David just so I don't get things terribly wrong over here... did you just a normal 'non remote shift' R154?

I was under the impression the gear selector sits too far forward in these units to properly fit in?

I am using a non remote shift r154 , you are correct mate :-) just need to "goose neck" the gear stick slightly not much at all really, here is some pics of where the selector sits in the center console with out remote shift, will take some pics of the hole I cut soon...

sorry those pics are very dark, I am using my pxt phone to take the pics I will take some high res pics but wont post them here to large, but you can see it is quite close to the ashtray you can select the ford gears but if the gear shifter is goose necked a little it will make all the dif! As you can see the trim already fits on quite nice so it's not too bad!

They are both $46.77 from toyota last time I checked (3 weeks ago)

Will def buy parts if need be of course depending on how much etc... if I buy a new soarer R154 mount will it mate up to the auto alloy x member, because the mount (from a Cresta Jzx90) on the R154 box right now wont mount on to the auto soarer x member...

I had herd that as well I was wishing that would be the case, but oh well it sits about 20 mills to far ford the W5* series gearbox's sit much much too far ford so I am told!

Good stuff David.

I will be very interested to have a look once it's done and see how it goes. Would it be possible to come check it out at some point and maybe you take me around the block for a quick spin? I'd like to see what sort of a difference the non remote shift makes...

Thanks!!
