Hi guys,

Changed my transmission a few months back for two reasons:

1 - It was not shifting in drive, would rev all the way to redline and then when backing off the accelerator it would then shift.
2 - There was a 2-3 second delay for the transmission to engage when putting the car into reverse.

So i bought a second hand low km transmission and installed it into the car with new filter, and complete flush and service. After completing this the problem with the reverse gear taking 2-3 secs to engage remained, yet the drive issue was fixed. Just recently i had another problem appear, which was error 63 (severed solenoids 1&2). This made the car slip or have very little take off in drive, although 1st and 2nd worked fine, but the amazing thing was that the reverse gear fixed itself, it would engage as soon as car was put into reverse.

The error 63 seemed to be intermitant, and so did the problem with the reverse gear...

With Error 63 -> Drive issues, yet reverse worked fine, engaged immediately.
Without Error 63 -> No drive issues, yet reverse took 2-3 secs to engage.

Anyway couldn't keep it the way it was with drive failing, so pulled the solenoids out, cleaned them and the wiring loom connectors, put it back together, no more errors, drive now works fine, but reverse is back to the 2-3 sec delay...

Any ideas, what could be causing the issue with the reverse gear and the delay...taking into consideration that it disappeared when solenoids 1&2 were supposedly severed...

Many thanks.

Plenty of fluid in the box? Solenoids definitely not crook, and in correct positions, and plugged in correctly? Correct type of fluid in the box (Toyota Type IV?)?
Do you have a trans cooler, or any kind of kink or blockage in the transmission hoses?

The auto box shows to be filled to the right level on the dip stick when cold and also when hot. I have taken the solenoids out one by one, cleaned and tested them and they are working fine...made sure they went in to the same place where they came out ;). The fluid used in the box is Toyota Type IV fluid, as what was being used in the old box which showed the same symptoms. I have also had a new oil filter installed. The only trans cooler that i have is the one connected to the radiator at the front of the car...am pretty sure visually anyway that there are no kinks or blockages...

I had the auto box flushed and filled by a transmission and differentials place, and i provided him with the Type IV fluid, so I am hoping that he used what I gave him...as i guess there is no other way of telling otherwise...

I have noticed thou that the transmission runs quite hot when driving it, but this may be normal for it...?

I have referred back to the A340E manual and it says that for time lag issues, the following may be the problem...

Time Lag: Less then 1.5 seconds

If N -> R time lag is longer than specified:
- Line pressure to low
- Direct Clutch Worn
- First and reverse brake worn
- O/D one-way clutch not operating properly

It mentions that if the line pressure is too low, this may be due to an incorrectly adjusted throttle cable...i might check this and make sure that the cable is correct before looking any deeper...

Thanks,

I had a kink in my metal trans hose near the exhaust, used to give me some harsh downshifts from 2->1 if I'd been driving the car hard then stopped at the lights. Replaced it all and it seems fine now.
Check the kickdown cable (next to your throttle cable) and see that it is adjusted right.
