i have just installed a trans temp gauge, what is the normal running temps of a slightly modded 1J auto

i think i may have it plumbed in the cooler as the temp can change very quickly when i get up it

120 degrees C is where it starts to damage. mine would go up to 95 doing a burnout and then stalling it up on the start line.i then shifted the cooler to in front of radiator and added a second one in front of left hand front wheel. at cruise it is 50-70 degrees now, and never gets hot like it used to.i once hit 120 degrees when going thru some long slow windies, so had to stop.by the way,i have a 3000 rpm stall convertor, so more heat.

Coolant temp determines trans oil temp to a large degree, so trans oil temp won't rise more than 91-95degrees C unless you're really giving it to the trans.

I'd put it before the cooler to see how hot it actually gets.

Thermo temp won't effect the trans temp much at all.

When the thermostat is closed, the coolant will cool down more because it's not being pumped into a hot engine.

If you get a cooler thermo, the radiator will have fluid flowing through it more freqently so the temp drop from top to bottom will be less, making the coolant hotter if you are driving hard.

I've bypassed the radiator and am running a Davies Craig cooler (biggest one I could get) instead. Mounted in front of the radiator. Ideally you want to keep it between 50 and 80 degrees C. 120+ is where the box starts to suffer serious clutch pack damage.
I find it shifts a bit hard when cold in the mornings. As soon as the fluid warms up, the heat seams to fix up the tolerances in the box and it shifts nice.

Before the cooler will tell you how hot the tranny is actually getting.

Installing it after the cooler dons't really give you anything usefull unless you want to install one before and after which will tell you how well your cooler is working.

I had my temp sensor mounted before the cooler. I'm toying with mounting it inside the sump itself though.

Thats where I will be mounting my sender, in the sump itself, I thought thats where you would get the most accurate reading??

Sorry to dig up this old thread guys but can anyone recommend the best way to run a trans cooler? Is it better to use it in conjunction with the factory radiator cooler, or bypass it altogether? What size Trans cooler is recommended?
Regarding the temp sender, I soldered a brass fitting directly onto the sump on the corner where the dipstick is. Heaps of room there for the sensor.

bypass the radiator. make sure trans cooler is in FRONT of radiator, not behind. i have one installed in front of the left front wheel.

I have mine running through the Radiator cooler 1st to help bring it down some, then into the Trans cooler and back to the trans.. I have mine mounted where the Stock SMIC was and have a thermo fan on the back side of it to help when the car is stationary :-) Works pretty well so far !

i have the same setup as Daniel, but with no thermo fan.

I bought a used (but in great nick) tranny cooler from an Auto Magic Mitsubishi Magna.... good size, good fittings and ... well... good n cheap yet effective
