Hi guys, this thread is mainly aimed at those who have performed manual conversions and good ol' Mr Neil Griffiths over there :-)

Basically with the upgrades that I have planned for the very near future, the standard auto gearbox will just simply not be able to take it. Now I do know that there is the option of getting the auto box rebuilt, but this is where I'd prefer to just swap to a R154 simply because I have always wanted a manual Soarer but could just not afford one at the time of purchase.

And no, I am not going to sell my car to buy a manual one. If you have seen my car, you would know why.

So with all that out of the way, I'm looking for a thorough list of everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) that is going to be needed to do the conversion. The 'box I'm looking at is coming out of a wrecked Soarer, and would like to check it against the owner of the wreck to make sure that everything that is going to be needed for the conversion is there.

Good work Don. I have been reading quite a bit of manual conversion threads via the Search function and realised this list was created back in the ALSC days!

Does anyone have anything else to add to this list?

The Slave Cylinder and Master Cylinder are cheap enough to buy brand new from Toyota. I recommend you buy them brand new then used 2nd hand parts, Only because ive had ALOT of annoying clutch problems which i still have now.

Maltech sell a clutch hose that may be worth buying aswell.

Well the entire manual kit that I'm getting is coming straight out of a Soarer. Hopefully the cylinders are in decent condition.

Will let you know how it goes when I install the 'box, which should be within the month.

Congratulations Vinh I bet you'll be over the moon once you get it done. You'll be going for hundreds of those late night 'pointless' drives

Well I already own a JZA80 6 speed so I have most of my late night pointless drives in that :-)

Looks like that's being sold on the weekend to an extremely keen guy, so I suppose the 5 speed will have to do for now!

.. Until I get my next car. Maybe an S2000 or a 350Z, still thinking..

Yeah I just noticed that you had the JZA80 after I wrote it...would be unreal but still completely different to a manual cruiser *drool*

Damn what you selling for. How much? I was THIS >-< close to getting a TT 6 speed Supra instead of my Soarer but once I saw Richard Tan's VVTI Royal Saphire Pearl Turbo Manual....I didn't care about the slightly less power I just had to have it. Hey you reckon it would be hard to swap an R154 for a getrag? Are 6 speeds way better?

Two of my very close friends have an S2000 and a 350Z respectively. Pretty nice cars but special about them nothing to write home about in my opinion. Especially not that burnt orange colour that my mate got his 350 in. Ick. Personally I'd prefer a Supra (then again I love cars that come turbo from factory).

Have you looked into late model turbo Mitsubishi GTO's (3000gt)? I nearly got one of those too but I couldn't afford a late model. Or do you prefer to trade that AWD traction for RWD Action ? (heeey I should make that my quote!)

Like my long post? Vinh I expect you to reply to all of my questions and comments or else I will be deeply offended...

Hahahaha

Well the Supra sure is fun to drive. You hit 100KM/H before you're even in 3rd gear. Then there's 3 more gears to go after that!

Unfortunately I have to sell because I am currently looking at a very nice house that I want to purchase and need to put a deposit on it ASAP. It's a white '97 NON VVT-i with FMIC, 18" Volks, TRD catback and steering wheel, POD, BOV, etc, etc.

Very nice car and extremely smooth to drive, especially with the 6 speed in there. I have it advertised for $30,500 which is pretty cheap for these sought after models. The '97 non VVT-i's are extremely popular and hard to find because they offer the non VVT-i 2JZ-GTE (where aftermarket parts are very easy to find) and have the late model sexy looks.

Regarding the gearboxes, I have never had the chance to drive a R154 as of yet but I'm sure they aren't as clunky as the V160's. On the other hand though, once you get used to the V160 it becomes very smooth and easy to drive. Lots of gears to choose from too :-)
It's up to you at the end of the day, but the V160 is definitely stronger then the R154.

R154 to V160 conversions aren't popular because the V160 boxes are so expensive (like $4000 if you manage to even find one)
I hear that the transmission tunnel will need to be modified, but it is definitely possible. It all comes down to how much money you're willing to spend.

With the S2000/350Z, I am personally looking for them in WHITE only. It's actually very hard to find either cars in white. I am leaning more towards the 350Z because I may be TT'ing it in the future when funds are back up again. Either way, both cars are very sexy in white + some Volks of some sort.

Never looked into GTO's, although I have always liked them. Don't really want to think about cars at the moment as I really have to get this bloody loan approved for the new house!

Will definitely have a look at all these options in the future. We'll see how finances go :-)
