Hi Guys,
I seem to be having a problem with selecting and using reverse gear in my soarer. It used to take a while to clunk into gear but and it still does but now when it engages, its only lightly.
For example - select R... wait... feel it engage ... car can walk itself in reverse (idle), but if i put the foot down it slips and HARO goes nowhere
* Oil levels are fine * Gearbox was flushed/serviced about 5 - 6000 kms ago. * Just installed an oil cooler (problem was before this anyways)
Note - my engine is on a lean due to a crapped out engine mount (fixing VERY soon) would that affect it ?
It also seems to 'hover' between gears 2 and 3 when driving normally, yet if i boot it - she shifts in those gears fine.
I did some research on this through this site but needed some more clarification.
My car isnt a dyno warrior by any means, it makes just over 200kw at the wheels but it has done 170 000kms...
Any ideas, advise and tips would be much appreciated !

are you sure the oil level is right. (did you check it with the engine running). what colour is the oil. if both are fine it would pay to remove the pan and check the filter + any rubbish in the bottom of the pan. reverse dosn't use a band (only clutches). might be time for a rebuild. take it to a automatic place and get a quote.

Mine did the same thing when I blew the auto up. I could put it into reverse, and it would immediately start reversing VERY slowly (if on a level surface), and never uphill. When it went, it also took out 3rd and 4th. You could try pulling the pan off and cleaning out the filter (and even the valve body if you are keen), as it is probably full of clutch pack material. Better option would be to just buy a 2ndhand auto to put in, they are usually $300-600.

I recall that the pressure source for third and or overdrive is shared by the reverse gear, so they're proportional to some degree. If the related hardware is not holding pressure, your going to lose third or OD driving it in that condition.
At first glance, its sounded like a solenoid problem to me. I'm not intimate with the workings of our auto, but i've experienced this 'half gripping' problem first hand in a friends car and it was a pressure related issue caused by worn accumulator seals and dead solenoids.
