i have found a w58 gearbox for my up and coming manual conversion, however i am a bit worried that it isnt what they say it is, could anyone let me know if there are anything that proves that it is actually a w58 and not something else. and also are all w58's fine for soarer manual conversion?? thanks team azza.

So make it smaller, or post it on a photo site and then put a link here.
I can not help you identify it but if you are planning on no more than 200kW or so then the W58 is fine. I use one and have (or rather had, sob) 158rwkw.

Aaron - I ran 330rwhp through mine with no issues from the gearbox at all.
HOWEVER - be aware that the factory push-type clutch pressure plate is made from cast-iron, not steel/chromoly, and this can leave it susceptible to shattering if it gets too hot - so leave the pressure plate unmodified, dont go uprating its clamping force.
You will also need the W58 flywheel to suit the 1jz - this is different to the usual manual supra/soarer flywheel to suit the R154 box - the pressure plate bolt holes are in a different configuration.
I have a stock one for sale if you get stuck for one on the island.
As far as fitting one in the soarer - make sure you get the W58 with the remote-type gear shift - it looks like this:
EDIT: Just noticed you've got a V8, so my flywheel will not be suitable.
However, this means you may need a special bellhousing made up, does it not?? Speak to Neil Griffiths or Lew Radburn from these forums for more info there

Also, being a push-type clutch, you may find yourself somewhat stuck for aftermarket options - clutch, short-shifter, etc. Most of the stuff quoted as being available for manual supras/soarers is to suit the pull-type R154 setup.
Make sure you get the tailshaft yoke with the box also - as the W58 takes a smaller yoke than the R154/autos (yoke is the same).
Again, I have a W58 tailshaft/yoke if you need one.

Short shifter is no problem. In fact I have a spare (same as on my car) unused one I can sell you for a fraction of the prices short-shifters have been going here recently.

Sorry David, I spose what I should say is be careful when buying after-market gear of making completely certain that the item is to suit the W58 gearbox you have - a lot of the time stuff advertised/listed in catalogues to suit manual Soarers is made for the R154.
And Stefan is correct - there are a number of variants of the W58, mainly to do with the shifter housing/positioning/type.

thanks everybody the knowledge in this site is awesome, the box that i have lined up is the same as the photo that you posted shane, so that puts my mind at ease a bit, i am getting a chromoly flywheel put in and the bellhousing is getting custom fabricated. thanks for the input much appreciated azza
