Hi all, i recently (well today actually) had the Auto gearbox in my car replaced (91' Soarer TT).

The old one (117,000k's) was having major problems shifting into second (full throttle it would jerk around on the limiter for 2 seconds) and at normal pace would slowly slide into gear.

Anyways i was going to replace the Shift Solenoid when it then started to slip under mild acceleration.

So anyway i got a newer "low kays" box in from Brisbane and had my mechanic put it in today.

A couple of things thou, WOW is this box smooth! What an absolute beauty! However I took it for a couple of hard runs and found that when changing into 2nd from 1st under full accel it would according to the dash change at 6k rpm and it would do so very harshly, by harsh i mean QUICK! I put it in power mode and does the same thing.

My Question, is that what a new-ish Soarer box is really like? I know with my old box when it was still good it would go all the way to redline no matter the switch and as changing it would do the "flutter" or retard the ignition.

Has it got a shift kit?

Btw, the dash indicates the box changes at around 69kph.

Regards,
Drew

by the harshness of the changes, it sounds like it MAY have a shift kit.

does it still shift hard even under "grandma" acceleration?? almost a bit too hard? if so, then definitely shift kit.

The gearbox lag between 1st/2nd under full throttle doesn't automatically mean your box is rooted. It's normal.

Although, slipping under grandpa driving is a worry :-)

Sounds like you have a shift kit :-) Does it chirp into gears when you thrash it?

Cheers.

Check how tight the LPS cable is. The box should change before redline, that might have been another problem with your old box.

under "grandma" acceleration or town driving I can't honestly feel the shifts, so no, not harsh under those conditions.

Puzzling eh? :-)

im not sure on what the LPS cable is so i might leave that one for the moment.

Morgan: yeah i know the flutter is supposed to be normal but not having the car bounce of the red line while the gearbox sort of half changes gear, then lets off then tries to change again. Really jerks ya around in the cabin, well it did :D

And no, it doesn't chirp into 2nd but it sure is one helluva quick change :-)

Drew - The Line Pressure cable.

It adjusts line pressure to the box varying with throttle position. No idea about what it looks like on the TT, but will be another cable coming fromm the throttle body somewhere. It may need adjustment???

Cable from throttle body going down to gearbox. If it is tight, changes can be a bit harsh, even just going from Neutral or park into gear can cause a bit of a bang. Well, not a bang exactly, but you get the idea :-)

ahhh, yeah ok i know what you mean now. IF indeed this cable was really tight, wouldn't it cause all the gearchanges to be fairly harsh (ie not just 1st under full accel)?

Sorry I'm learning as i go here

Probably. Your changes do sound a bit like a shift kit though.

Sounds like it has the later improved shift kit. Nice gentle(ish) changes until you boot it. Much better than standard.

I doubt it Mark, I have a throttle sensitive kit and no matter how you drive you feel it, it's juat a LOT harsher when you sink the boot.
