No. The gear selector tells the ECU what you want to do, the ECU then decides how best to change and when it's safe to do it.

It's all part of the main engine ECU located in the passengers footwell.

if you get a aftermarket ecu you will need to change gears by shifting the shifter from 1st to dr i think
