Recently had transmission changed and now have a problem with a horrible grinding/vibration sound after around 20mins continuous driving. Took it back and was told that it wasnt the gearbox but the centre cv joint/bearing/spline or something in that region. Was further told that the whole drive shaft would need replacing as the parts are not replaceable!?! please tell me this guy is yanking my chain.

By changed the tranny do you mean changed it over to a manual or just changed the auto box. I have had the same problem with mine after it was converted to a manual. It seems to be the tailshaft not being balanced or the tailshaft yoke. You should be able to find a second hand tailshaft though.

Thanks jason, no it was just a swap over of the auto box. The noise doesnt sound like its at the tail end though, and im confused that it only does it when hot.

Thanks Shane, thats where its going tommorrow. I suppose i am a bit impatient when it comes to getting answers. Niall does almost all of my work. its just in this case i thought it better to take it to an auto gearbox specialist (little did i know they a complete bunch of turkeys)

Thanks heaps guys, Niall as usual got to the source of the problem tho, turns out it was pressure on the transmission mount which was displacing the rubber causing metal on metal situation. it would be hard to diagnose because it looked intact. Turns out that this was caused by the wrong extension housing being fitted on the gearbox (too long) probably from a cressida or celsior. Fortunately the driveshaft was ok and niall rescued me before i paid for a replacement (he reckons that the driveshaft components rarely fail). hope this helps someone but unlikely as it was such a long shot.

Sounds a lot like mine Ben. I am planning on taking it to VEEM engineering, unless anyone knows of another place in W.A that is not run by 17 year olds that have no idea. What was the cost? If you don't mind me asking.

Jason the replacement gearbox was $1400 which is ok except they were MEANT to do a full recon, turns out at best they may have replaced paper clutch and auto kit, oil etc. They also broke my p/steering hose for free. Niall charged me 45 bucks for the new extension housing and 250 for labour (A lot needs to be removed to get the housing removed). just a thought it might be worth taking the cross member off the trans mount and giving it a full inspection before doing anything with the tail shaft. Everyone other than Niall gave me varying (wrong) opinions of the cause, including midas and the trans 'specialists'
