93 SC400, 135,000 miles. When I first start it, it makes a fairly loud whirring sound from the trans. It will back out the garage ok, but as the noise slows to a stop-so does the car. Will not go forward or back. The OD light is not sending a code. The fluid is full and does not smell burnt. Does not leak, and recently added 1/2 quart. of Toyota Type 4 to top it off. I have noticed it seemed confused about a gear change 2-3 times in the recent past. Also, I had it sitting for 2 weeks while doing the brake pads (got busy with other things), and the battery had gone flat. After checking for codes, I tried an ECU reset, but it did not help. I saw where you could unplug the ECU on a Supra and test the box for manual gear change, but it appears on SC's the ECU is combined with the engine ecu-so no test driving. Do I need to short the diagnostic plug for the OD light to throw a code? I see some problems are due to bad grounding. Anyone see that cause this problem? What's the best way to trouble shoot this? Thanks, new here from Texas. Maybe time for a JDM or rebuilt with a shift kit and high performance torque converter?

All I can suggest is that you tow it to a reputable auto shop.
Sorry Dennis.

Reset the ECU again.. Then when you start it up, Have your Handbrake ON and Footbrake ON also. Move the gear selector into each gear. Leave it in each slot for 4-5 seconds. Ie, Start in Park, then R then N then D then 2 then 1 and back up through to park.

See if that helps.

Thanks, I'll try that soon. I've got to put my dash back together. (Mirror computer-what a bitch THAT was-never again. Oh, and those plugs going to the gauge assembly, there's an hour of my life I'll never get back!)

OK, tried the reset. start-up etc. no help. I think I have mechanical damage rather then computer related from the sounds it makes. Thanks though. Anyone know what trannie I can use? Some charts show a change at 2/94, some say A341E as long as it's a 4-speed, not the 5-speed 650. And the JDM people want to see it to figure out if theirs fits. Damn, I just want a transmission...........

Good news! My mechanic was to pull it for me so I could compare it to a salvage one. Upon draining the oil he decided to look at the filter and it was a little dirty, but no metal, no big pieces. He cleaned it and tried it and it works like new. I am currently changing out the T-IV fluid a little at a time because he thought it used Dexron like the SC300 and test drove it like that. I had him drain it as soon as he told me and we put the T-IV in it. Oh, and now the mirrors work, thanks to the salvage computer.
