I know this topic has been flogged to death, but having thought the sixes were OK to use Dexron, I checked my AT fluid level today, only to notice "FLUID TYPE T-IV" on it, which I assume means Toyota Type 4 like the V8s take. This is most curious, as the '95 model definitely had "Dexron II" on the dipstick (Dex III having not yet been released, I believe).

I have info that states 99 sc300's in the USA take T-IV. If they altered the auto's in Japan ahead of that to see how they went, then maybe it does take it!!

Now that I think about it, the auto boxes are different. The VVTi (equivalent to '98 and on SC300) is "intelligent" auto so that would explain (one hopes ) the change to T-IV.

Rock on Sam, rock on! On another note, the auto tranny in the US SC300 has the gated shifter, are they the same as in the JDM version (minus the gated shifter mechanism)? I noticed the JZX100 Chasers have the gated shifter as well instead of the shifters we've got.

Just to revive an old thread. What would happen if you run DEX3 in a VVTI auto box?

I noticed Waikato Toyota has Type IV for $18.90 for 4 litres in the metal can at the mo - I'll be back there this morning to pick up my distributor o ring, so I'll double check to make sure as the price seemed too good to be true when I thought about it later on.

Nah, I read it wrong - the brake fluid was $19 for a litre - Type IV was over $100 for 4.

That's insane, $100 for 4 litres, and a full flush requires 12...$300 for just the fluid!?! Maybe give Nulon's fully synthetic fluid a shot, it says it's a suitable replacement for Toyota Type IV : http://bit.ly/MWcm2f I believe Penrite also make a suitable substitute for type IV, both in a semi synthetic and full synthetic versions.

looks like i can get the nulon atf for around $60-70 per 4L which is much better than the toyota price. Just for reference incase people haven't seen it http://www.jzx100.com/forum/topic/5392-changing-the-automatic-transmission-fluid/ someone should sticky that as i, and probably many other people will/have found this very helpful

$100 for 4L wow I thought Australia was bad for prices but that is insane. For the record I have a receipt for $42.90AU (Trade) for 4L from Feb-2011. Is there some company that will freight oil over for a reasonable price?

| I will be able to organize something for T-IV if there is enough interest from Soarer and Celsior owners, PM/EMail me if interest Toyota Dealer told me T-II On my LS400 Dipstick means DEXRON!, I went to another dealership and they said the same thing I was so close to putting the wrong fluid in my car. These were parts specialists too. I Emailed Toyota head office and wrote a letter, I attached to them a easy to read TSB (From Toyota), that outlines how to read the dipstick and what fluid you can and cant put in place. I got no response So if you want T-IV at Cheaper prices than what Toyota is asking, and will buy from me when I can have it available express your interest by PM me your contact Email and how much you would buy (12L Being Norm for a Proper Change) or if you need for multiple Soarers or other cars. I'm able to freight to your door. If I can make this go ahead if there is enough demand, I will send a big Email to everyone when it is ready.

So i just called MV automatics who specialise in rebuilding soarer tranmissions and he said that it'll be fine to run DEX 3 in my box. Just not as many additives and so it just wont be as smooth as running Type IV. They run DEX3 in all their transmissions. $71 for 10L of DEX3 and $37.50 for a new filter/gasket etc

Yeah I guess every different manufacturer might put their own additives and have their own blends. When first got my Celsior I went to Toyota and they told me "T-II on dipstick means D-II = Dexron" and worst advice it was, so i went and bought Dexron off Supercheap and it made the car run like crap so i didn't continue to flush it all out and put Dex in, returned extra bottle of the Dexron and bought another one which was said to be compatible with what my Auto trans used from factory, ran better. Later when the Dealer had T Type trans fluid which was what was suggested in the Dipstick and Factory Service specs, bought 12L of it, did one change, did another change, then third change.... ran the best and smoothest. Since then have always used Genuine T-IV in my V8 and Toyota Coolant too, love how smooth the Celsior drives, I went to the Ford dealership today to look at getting a G6E Falcon, Interior smelt like crap and felt a bit cheap, No Passenger Electrics and this was the Luxury version ... got to love the Soarers and LS400/Celsiors.

Yeah i wouldn't use anything other than what it specifies, not using T-IV when it's required in the V8 and VVT-i Soarer's will cause issues, just read through some threads on here about all the problems it causes. Just bite the bullet, it doesn't have to be changed again for quite a while. Or at least use the Nulon or Penrite fully synthetic ATF that is designed to substitute T-IV, It's a bit cheaper.

You won't need a new pickup strainer - they last forever as they are made of steel. At worst it'll just need cleaning. Personally after removing mine and replacing the strainer at 150,000km, had I known how clean it would be I wouldn't have bothered, just left it as it was and flushed it. Also there is no gasket, you just use high temperature sealant to reseal the pan.

"The T-II" means DexII as far as I know, superceded by DexIII, as discussed earlier in this (very) old thread. It doesn't mean Toyota IV. Maybe there's a difference between DexII & III that's important? Just as there are differences between engine oils, there are probably also differences between different brands of DexII, too, although one would think they'd all be made to a spec laid down by the manufacturers of 'boxes. |

Yes it does mean Toyota T Type Fluid (T-II, T-II and T-IV which is backward compatible with the older ones), there is a Toyota Technical Service bulletin that explains this. T-II = Toyota T Type Fluid not Dexron. Originally when the car was new There was T-II, Superseded by T-III and T-IV, so which is why you should use T-IV where the Dipstick says either T-II, or T-III

Nick, Boris will sell you the real stuff delivered to your door for around $48/4L and if you can haggle your local Mr T you can get it a bit cheaper. So there really is very little to gain by trying anything else because if it goes wrong then you have forked out $40 for nothing.
