Has any one had trouble selecting 1st, 3rd and 5th in R154 gearbox. I took the car for a short drive this morning and everything was fine until I came to a round about, selected 3rd gear OK, accelerated then selected 4th OK and around 100kph went to select 5th, but couldn't. As I was neutral and the car was slowing down I then tried to select 3rd or 4th but couldn't. Pulled over the side of the road and tried again, but only could get 2nd, 4th and reverse.
When I got home I tried again, no luck. Even reversed up the driveway and tried again, as before no luck.
I though the nylon bush at the end of the gear lever might have come off. Pulled out the gear lever and the bush was still clipped around the ball at the end of the gear lever.
If I can fix this while the gearbox is in the car it would be great. If the gearbox has to come out I will have to pull the motor and gearbox together which is something I would like to avoid.

I just used what Castrol recommended for this gearbox. The gear shift has been good up until Sunday. The gearbox has only done 2500klm since it was reconditioned.

ouch, id take it back to where it got reconditioned mate, Sounds like they have stuffed something up.
As Simon said you can Try Redline MTL its expensive but well worth the money. I personally use Redline LWSP and cost the same ammount but i wouldnt use Redline LWSP untill you have tried Redline MTL.

If the box has just been reconditioned then I'd guess that you are running the wrong oil.
Redline is no good for boxes that have just been rebuilt. It works wonders on boxes that have done several hundred thou, but crap on boxes that are virtually brand new.

Problem has been rectified. The nylon piece at the end of the gear lever fell off when I setting up the gear lever after I first put the gear box in the car. After this happened I tried to find it, but it was well hidden. I contacted a couple of gearbox shops including the one that overhauled the gearbox with "what should I do". The answer was don't worry about as it cannot cause any damage. Well after about 12 months floating around in the extension housing this small piece of nylon found its way to top of the gearbox and lodged itself between the back of the casing and the selector rail. The rail would go forward, but not backwards. No 1st, 3rd or 5th. Removed the selector cover on the extension housing and removed the offending item without removing the gearbox from the car, although it was one pr**k of a job.
Now everything works fine. Thanks to everyone with your ideas.

Lucky Break!
Regarding the glazing synchros, I've come to the conclusion that its a bit of BS. If you overfill your box with redline - you will have a problem. If you keep the box filled to the correct level and even with new synchros - it should be fine.
