Hey guys i have decided to go down the route of fitting the W58 manual to my V8. I am choosing the W58 over the R154 due to smoother and better shift changes reported on this site. I have done a few searches and come up with a few answers but i am after a few straight answers to my questions and parts list to start collecting the parts. I find myslef fairly mechanically minded but lack the workshop tools except for a basic to intermediate tool box and an open garage. With all parts is this a weekend job and would i be able to pull it off with car on stands and with a basic tool box setup?? I have a parts list for the R154 to 1JZ but i am using the W58 to 1UZ what changes in this parts list below..

Parts list for an Auto to R154 Manual conversion would be:
Clutch pedal assembly
Clutch pedal switch
Clutch Master cylinder
Master to slave cylinder hydraulic line hard line
Slave cylinder flexible hydraulic hose
Slave cylinder hydraulic hard pipe
Slave cylinder
Shift fork
Spigot bearing
Flywheel w/ ring gear
NEW Flywheel bolts
Clutch, pressure plate and thrust washer
R154 5 Speed M/T
R154 to 1JZ Soarer specific bellhousing
Soarer specific R154 shifter mechanism
M/T tailshaft
Crossmember
Gearbox mount
M/T tunnel rubber boots/insulators X 2
M/T center console shifter surround and boot
M/T Gearknob
M/T specific EFI ECU or modified A/T ECT/EFI ECU

I thankyou in advance for your answers and i am sorry if i have over read some threads but all help would be very greatfull.

Kindest Regards

Also I want to make sure i have Everything Covered before i start the conversion ie. what problems i am likely to face during the conversion from transmision out to gearbox in and startup of car. I have read the problems with the ECU and speedo's but is the car drivable to and autoelectrician or do i need him to come to me.

Once again thankyou

The dreaded ECT error bling that will come up on your dash. That still hasn't been sorted by ANYONE.

You need resistance between the solenoid wires going to the ECU. Then you need the correct speed signal going back it also.

Should solve the problem!

Sounds real easy, wonder why nobody has EVER been able to solve this.

Both sensors obviously pick up different signals to feed to the ECU. Front one probably gets input shaft which may have something to do with torque converter lockup.

Rear is output shaft so will be a speed signal for the ABS, power steering, and speedo.

Thanks for the answers guys very gratefull. Does anyone have the exact parts list needed for the W58 conversion?? I have just purchased the W58 gearbox so now to move onto the smaller bits and pieces. Parts list and from what car and/or part codes would be really helpfull. What bellhousing do i use and were do i find an adaptor plate??

Has anyone had experience with the Dellow kit?? Is it worth buying this kit or finding the parts seperatly??

I used the dellow kit.
with the dellow kit you will need to get a grease groove cut into the thrust race as mine didn't come with one.

You can also use the crs bellhousing or the a1 turbo nz mob. adpators are also available from NZ, they are on trademe.

You will need a custom length tailshaft.

ABS also gets a speed signal as it doesn't work under certain Km/ph. Gearbox also supplies a speed pulse which the ECU uses for cruise control.

So there are a myriad of little issues and 'maybes' but until someone lifts a V8 auto up in the air and using a scope, traces the signals from both speed sensor points on the stock auto, then we are swimming against a rip tide.

With the custom lenth tailshaft what do i do for that?? I have read that it will need to be lengthened by 50mm and friction welded but i think that was for the R154 not the W58 is it the same for both??

i have a scope sitting here.. problem is no v8 and no intention of ever doing this conversion. would probably be able to work it out if i was doing it

That tailshaft length is for the 1jz to r154 combination. As i did it for the 1uz r154 i don't know what length you will require. You can always measure it.

I will be doing the same conversion eventually, i've been told that the jza80 w58 digi speedo drive will output the right signal for the dash/abs/power steer/cruise etc but i have no idea where to wire it to.

Any 4 pulse/rev output sensor will drive the speedo correctly (mine is aftermarket and was $100ish)

But to keep the ABS working you will need to get a W58 that already has the ABS sensor in it, get a later model W58 that has the ability to have the ABS sensor put on it, or use an early W58 and modify it to accept an ABS sensor.

Here's my Toymods thread where I was researching the ability to get ABS through a W58 (very very few W58'd cars have ABS).
http://toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=35861
I've personally just modded my early model W57 to accept an ABS sensor (which I got from a UZS131 Crown). Its in my MA70 Supra. I am yet to test it though, but its looking promising.
