Hi all, as we all know the R154 is said to be the big brother of the W58. I'd like to know if anyone here has personal blown 1 of them up, if so what let go and what were u doing? I own a R154 with the 1JZ and know what it like living with the R154. But trying to get real info on the w58 for a project of mine, as the W58 is a $500 box compared to $1500> of the R154 when u can find them. Any feed back will be GREAT!

I had a W58 in my old Soop and it never missed a beat, granted I only had an exhaust on the car so the power figures weren't through the roof and it seemed to hold up well. Problem is I dunno how it'd last with 1JZ power :-(

Sorry

I have a W58 in my V8 and its awesome. Check out
www.clublexus.com and if you dig around you can find info on guys with turboed SC300's running W58's and they seem to hold up OK.

The W55 behind my 200rwkw TT is holding up fine, I don't abuse it, but have definantly given it a fair workout at times, jumping off the clutch into second and then stepping it out is a big favorite .
I have heard that gearboxes hold up alot better if you stick with a clutch which has a sprung centre. Im using a stock exceedy clutch kit on a steel flywheel, and its fine, although im sure its working pretty hard, and will probably use one of their uprated pressure plates next time around.
One of the drift guys over here is using a W5* box behinnd a 1jz and is happy with it, and it gets a REAL hammering, but at the end of the day, you can afford to blow at least 2-3 W5* boxes before you've paid for a R154.
I would love to have used a R154 for authenticity, but for me price and availability made the descision, and I'm quite happy with how its going. If I was going to upgrade, it would only be to a 6spd supra box

whats it going in, anyway?

Use a W5x with a non-sprung centre clutch, or slicks, and the gearbox will be living on borrowed time.

They handle plenty of power and plenty of torque, but you have to drive them with some mechanical sympathy.

A lot of W58 boxes blow up because they already had a problem before being sent over here. If the box is good and you don't thrash it, it will last.
