My car was getting fitted out by Audio Express in Brisbane (highly recommended) and Chris said that while fitting the car alarm he saw oil in my center console. Anyway I got home and had a look and there is smurfs blood (redline LWSP) all around my gear stick! A few times iv heard a hissing gas sound in the cabin followed by a few bubbling noises and a strong musty-oily smell and it now appears that it was my gearbox. And I thought it was ether a air con gas leak or heat exchange leak.
I'm hoping its just a seal, dos anyone know what would cos this Pressure in the gearbox ?,has it happened to anyone with R154's ? I've attached some pictures of the problem, Any help appreciated. Cheers

It looks like you have a short shifter fitted, remove it and check that there are gaskets to the top and where it bolts to the box. You can cut new ones from gasket paper and replace. The bottom one will be available from toyota as its common to the w58 as well.

Hey Jason.
I actually spoke to a Redline sales rep the other week about the Redline LWSP oil because thats what im running in my R154.
They said the oil is that good it gets into the all the hard spots really easy and its actually recommended to fill the oil just below where it should be, Because they did say it is possible for it to leak through the shifter if the seals are not that great.
But as Andrew said replace your seals and it will be all good Not a major problem their.

That's great news Shane ( I was freaking out when I first saw the leak), sounds exactly what has happened to me as I think when the mechanic put the oil in, they the over filled it a bit and like redline say its so good at getting into things that its leaked through the shifter seals.
I've checked the seals and they are defiantly compromised, dos anyone know the part numbers for the seals/gaskets and the rubber thing around the gear stick in the pictures ? so I can order them from Toyota.

Hey Andrew, yeah I think when I got the mechanic to put the oil in they must have put in to much.I cant remember what the capacity of the R154 is but I got an extra 1L of LWSP and my mechanic used most of that as well so I just assumed that it must of had a larger capacity..... silly me

R154 Oil Capacity is just over 3L. To do a R154 box and diff you need to get 1 Gal (3.8L) and a 1L as well to have enough.
If you added nearly 5L you have definately over filled and your shifting will be worse due to glazed synchros. I have filled up with around 3.5-3.7L and it has been fine.

So how you sposed to know how much to put in? In previous threads the advise was to "fill it till it overflows the fill hole". I put 3.8l in mine and it was nowhere near the fill plug, so I put in another USq and it is still not coming back out the fill hole.

Yep you have 5L of oil in there and that's why its overflowing.
Whack in 3.2 for good measure via the shifter hole after you dump it all out.
Note the location of the hole. It is not located near the shifter housing assy - it is located in the centerline of the gearbox on the side left (passengers) as in the picture.

It took nearly 5 litres! When I put in the first gallon the car was on stands at the front, which would have made the rear of the gearbox where the plug is slightly lower than the front, so would have overflowed earlier. When I put in the extra quart it was on stands all round, so pretty much level. I could just feel the fluid through the hole with my little finger.
The fluid I dropped out was a little over 3 litres, but the drain plug had been leaking and I don't know how much I had lost.

Thats odd, when you fill via that hole, you normally just pump it in until it starts coming back out, approx 3 - 3.2 l. I don't get whats been going on with yours to take 5 l when the car was on stands that would have made it lower at the filling point.
