Ok, i have been flat out for the past few weeks and have been neglecting these forums... sorry.

Last time i needed some fluid for my 5-Speed (R154) i got some Redline MTL off a guy in this forum for a pretty reasonable price and from the day i put it in it was a dream to shift.

it has been a while since i changed the fluid in it so i think i might do it with my next 5,000km service interval.

so if the person is on here still who got me the MTL, sent me an email (in profile). if anyone else here can get the Redline MTL fluid send me an email also.

Cheers.

I just got my local auto parts store to order it in for me.
Gave them the name and part number.

That said you only need to change it every few years unless you do track work.

Contact Oilworld in Cheltenham Vic.

Andrew looks after the Soarer owners. Just remind him that he usually gives us a discount ALSC However they did have a price rise and ask if he can ship it to you. ph. 03 95535450.

Coventrys Stores - NSW Redline distributor

I've still got a container left over from my R154 days which I cannot use in my V160.... if anyone in Sydney is interested, I'll part with it somewhat cheaper than retail.

David
For the 6 speed I use what Toyota re-brands and re-sells themselves at twice the price - Castrol Transmax Z
It's very high quality automatic transmission fluid.

Manny, can we use the Castrol Transmax Z in the R154 box?

I'm also intersted in that last MTL you have ha ha :-) but Josh has first dibs.

I remember someone named Darkstar was selling them on the old ALSC forum, well that's who I bought mine from last time.

Hi Jack, it's been a while :-)
I wouldn't recommend using Castrol Transmax Z in the Aisin Werner R154 5 speed gearbox - the Getrag V160 6 speed box is specifically designed with tolerances to use automatic transmission's fluid weight/viscosity as lubricant but I would suggest you'd prematurely wear the R154 out if you tried it.

Just out of curiosity Manny, so is Castrol Transmax Z like the ultimate oil for 6sp or is there better stuff?

Dragan
There may well be better, I don't know for sure - but Castrol Transmax Z is what Toyota supply, recommend and use and under their own branding and also what Getrag recommend.
The 6 speed doesn't have the same shifting characteristics as an R154, so fluid selection isn't as critical to some extent.

hahah true that the R154 has the shifting characteristics of a concrete block and crow bar (clunk, clunk). but I wouldnt swap it for the world

Strictly speaking mate, you can - thrust washers come to mind. But it takes a damn sight more abuse than just about any other gearbox.

I am told, however, that the Getrag 6 speed is even stronger - happy to be corrected on this.
