G'day all, first thread on the forums and it's unfortunate that it's in this section!
Having a few gearbox issues; When in "D-rive." the car ('93 TT) feels to be starting off heavy, and won't change into Second at all. However when starting off in L, shifting to 2 and up into D it changes fine. The solenoids have been changed, but this made no difference... I'm about to do a Transmission and ECU reset to see if it makes any difference. Wondering if anyone has had this issue before? Should I be looking for a new Gearbox? My transmission mechanic believes it's an electrical problem due to the manual shift into second holding the gear. The car has been read and no errors were found.
Thanks in advance,
Dave.

Any ECU wiring mods to the car? I had a similar (ish) problem when the wiring joints connecting the RSM to the ECU went dodgy. The ECU wasn't getting either speed or RPM signal (not sure which) so the ECU didn't know to change gears properly.

No wiring mods, straight stock. Both speed and RPM are showing up on the dash correctly so one would assume the signals are going through the car properly. Should I be checking possibly foul connections in the joints between the rev speed meter and the control unit?

Yep. If you have an RSM, then that's a wiring mod. Check where it's attached into the ECU wires.

Connections look fine. I'm thinking maybe find a working ECU; plug that in and see if it's the chip rather than a physical issue. Sound like a good plan? If you can think of anything else i'd greatly appreciate it.

Also; if anyone knows any auto sparky's in Brisbane capable of dealing with performance electronics (that won't burn a hole in my back pocket) i'd be very interested in details :-)

ECU's are known to go faulty with age, so it may need some work, but it could still be a dodgy joint even though they look fine. What does that mean? The electrical tape is still in place? :-)

It's still in place, and it looks pretty - therefore it must be fine! Haha.

Long, I'm pretty certain it's in first but like I said it feels "heavy" as if its starting in a higher gear, but it still revs up as if it was in first trying to hit second.

I had the same issue with my cressy, mine was worse even manually shifting the gear wouldn't work. Turned out the SP1 wire was not connected properly. So maybe check your RSM wiring again????

If its not wiring related, i would suggest its a solenoid in the box itself. These are a common thing to fail at the age of 18 years
