When I shift (into any selection including park) there is a problem in the dash regarding it displaying the gear that I'm in. For example, I shift into Drive, the gearbox changes into drive and the car wants to go. But there is no [D] in the gear selection display in the dash.
Also, I shift into Reverse, the gear pops into reverse and the car want's to move backwards. But [R] does not display in the dash, reversing lights do not come on.
Oh, also the red gear selection LED does not glow in the gear surround. After wiggling the gear stick around/ waiting a while/intermittently the [Gear] displays on the dash, and everything is normal.
What's broken?/What do i do? Thanks in advance, John

hmmm
take off the black plastic surround for the auto shifter. get a flat blade screwdriver and carefully pry it up. It should come out easily, I rip it off with my hands. There will be 2 connectors under there, big white block ones, check and see if they are loose. or even unplug, give them a clean and put them back.
Peter Taplin and I found we needed to use contact cleaner, stretch the little springs a bit and then add new grease. Good idea to remove the unit when the car hasn't been driven recently as it is difficult to remove in the tight space around the hot transmission.

To be honest Peter did mine using a two post hoist, a full set of tools and a hot transmission. I would think with a basic set of tools, some wheel stands (or jack if you like to live a little more dangerously) and a cold transmission it's a 3.5 out of 10. I would rate it even lower but it took some effort to pry the unit off the shaft once the bolt was undone. Perhaps when it is cold it is easier or some WD40 the night before would have helped.
