I want to do an R154 conversion on a TT. However, i've been doing some research and talking to some mechanics. A couple of them said that doing a manual conversion can cause problems with the cars computer. If this is true, is it really a problem or just an inconvenience?

Also, it would be greatly appreciated if you guys could share your opinoins/experience on R154 manual conversions in general.

Cheers

Search mate, there's tonnes of examples of successful R154 and even V160/161 conversions.

Usually, when you do the conversion, you get the manual dash, manual ecu, manual console surround and gearboot, the rest is mechanical (pedal box, gearbox, clutch cylinder, clutch, tail shaft, and everything else thats required (theres a lot)

But, no its not dangerous, just costs a little bit.

There is a bloke in canberra, very experienced with this conversion, has done a whole heap, will supply everything you need, and ....oh look hes a sponsor of this wonderful website: He also does 6 speed t56 conversions :-))))

It wont mess up the ECU. It will confuse it as your moving with no gearbox ;)

ECT errors will popup on your dash, that is all.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

Hey Michael, i'm going to pass on that beautiful car of yours. I don't have 15k budget

Thanks for the link Aaron, i'll check him out.I didn't think that there would be big problems because i read about people converting without problems. I guess I have to do it right the first time.

Thats good to hear Richard, i'm ok with error messages

George, most 'conversion kits' come manual ECU's. Besides, if you rengine is trying to tell you there is a legitimate reason for throwing a code, how will you know?

You do have to do it right the first time!! Spot on.

Good luck with it, a lot of people here who have done the conversion will help you on this site.

I have been told that you can use the auto ecu for a manual converted car. But the error codes will follow.

You CAN use an auto ECU on a manual converted car. ECT errors will show up on your dash. Im sure the map in the manual ECU is different so if you can afford it source and use a manual ECU.

As far as doing it spot on and not knowing what legitimate codes are being thrown up. If you are on a budget there is no need for the manual ECU. The manual gearbox wont communicate with the ECU and throw up any codes that I am aware of (its only connections are reverse lights and speed sensor). So when you read through your codes just disregard any relating to the gearbox...

No dangers and probably the best mod you can do on your car.

Budget 3-5k for the conversion depending on if you will be using a proper soarer conversion and/or new parts.

JZA70 pedals, master and so forth can be made to fit as well as the shifter can be modified to get it extended 30mm at the base for the soarer.

I will be showing my build log on SC shortly featuring my R154 swap and upgrade parts :-)

Hey Aaron, you can get a floor boot from Autobarn thats what i had to do as the factory one was rooted. They come on the shifter, so even if you get a new one they are very hard to get them on without tearing. $25 from Auotbarn does the job for me. It still ripped a bit getting it over the shaft.

Do it George. I've never looked back after doing the conversion.

Bumper to bumper traffic can get on your nerves but if you choose the right clutch, you should be right.

I have a factory manual soarer ECU for sale. I cant use it on my vvti.

Cant wait for my soarer to be converted but I went down the path of buying a whole manual soarer to wreck. Perhaps most expensive option initially but in the long term I think it is the cheapest and most easiest way to go about it
