Jordon, I recently done mine.

Got the 1.5 stage shift kit from MV autos in Adelaide. From memory it cost me $375 (postage included), BUT, I sent him my own valve body.

He charges a bit more if you want him to send you one over, then you send your old one back to him after you install it. I think it was around the 400-450 mark doing it that way.

I then fitted it myself, simple job, BUT make sure you use Toyota sealant (the red stuff).

As for durability, It comes down to how you drive it, but a transmission cooler is a definite if it gets beaten hard regularly.

Definitely worth it!! Your welcome to go for a ride in mine on the next meet if we ever have one again.

its worth about 30rwkw on the drag strip, i found. your 'box will last longer too, due to less heat caused by less slip(slurring between gears).

More shock transmitted down the drive train, increasing the risk of blowing a diff.

im getting a shift kit next week

im still trying to decide wheter to use M.V Autos, or AL's race glides (which is local) (and will cost me less), however, i was unsure about what 'stage' he will make my shift kit at...... (expect, been told to make it shift harder).... decisions....decisions...

I dropped in a 1.5 stage shift kit from MV automatics last week. I have not taken it for a test run yet.
But Michael from MV suggested I use Pertek gray max for the pan sealant. I hope it holds.
Has anyone else used gray max?

Stage 1 in my car; its pretty much at its peak in terms of how much of a shock it gives when it changes.
People will argue between the 1 and the 1.5 but i think its moot.
I'd prefer comfort than saving 100ms in my shift time =P

You can get the stage 1 kit and leave the Line pressure about halfway for smooth driving.. Wind the line pressure right up and it snaps you head on part throttle changes...

Awsome on the street / Strip though.

my 30 rwkw figure is from personal experience. i had 200rwkw, running 13.6 sec. i then had bigger injectors put in,dynoed car, and it was making low 170rwkws. ( the useless mechanic had pinched 2 of the six o-rings near the injector tips, and one injector spray was completely impeded!!, the other was partially blocked) i didn't have time to find the cause, and went racing, (but not before i put in the stage 2 shift kit) the car ran 13.5 and 13.6 secs.
I would go with daniel's recommendations if you drive a lot.

I don't think a shift kit will make any extra power but for performance it will obviously help as any time spent changing gears is not putting the power to the ground.

Blake: just curious as to what the trap speeds were on both of those runs? I imagine 2mph or so down on the post shift kit runs?

I have given my 1.5 shift kit a run this weekend. And I must say it’s not as rough as I anticipated. Driving around normally you can hardly notice any difference.
But put you foot down and she breaks traction between 1st and 2nd. I agree with Chris it’s not going to give you any extra power but it’s going to be quicker down the quarter mile.

PS: The gray max is holding up so far

sorry can't remember chris, long time ago.
am guessing the speed was down, due to losing 30 rwkw!
sorry to cause confusion . i am not saying you gain power with a shift kit. i am saying that a 170 rwkw soarer with sticky tires and a stage 1.5shift kit will match a 200rwkw soarer with sticky tires and no shift kit.

Blake: no probs mate :-) I know you know what you are talking about. As they say, hard to get emotion in text though :-)

Scott: where the line pressure cable connects to the throttle body there is an adjustment nut on that. There is also a knob that you can turn on the valve body itself but you have to drop the pan to get to that.

I think that is what they are referring to. I did it on my old gearbox, same day afterwards, the gearbox melted on me. Haven't tried it with the shift kit yet though, I'm still traumatised from my last experience with it.
