Hi all, I bought a 91 TT Auto 6 months ago, and have been slowly fixing it up, however it has a strange issue with the gear selector.

The selector seems to be misaligned with where the letters are for the gears slightly. As in it moves freely between gears, but the points that it clicks into and is properly in gear, seem to be slightly, which is most evident by my being unable to pull the selector all the way down into first, where it stops halfway in. D, N, R seem to be ok, but to shift back to second, it the selector slips halfway in, but stops just before it is about to click in, and i must press the button in to get it to click in properly. When i pull the selector back to L, it gets halfway there, then wont move back any further at all. So the selector is stopped around half a centimetre before it can click into first.

In order to get it to click in to P, i have to really push the selector up hard to the limits of the plastic. Is there a simple fix for this? Is my selector just incorrectly aligned, is my gearbox sitting slightly too far forward or back?

Any insight at all is very gratefully received. My thanks :-)

Mate when i was installing my shift kit i had the same prob, it wouldnt go into first! its going to be very hard to explain and it will be very easy to fix! your vavle body has a metal round thing coming out of it(it slides in and out of the valve body), sort of looks like a pen, That needs to be aligned correctly to the teeth on the gear box right next to it! you will understand exactly what i mean when you see it.
sorry mate i tried my best to explain it, im no mechanic!

Hmmm, methinks I should get a service manual so i can see what you're referring to. You're right it is difficult to explain, but thanks for the input :-)

I'll have a little play around and see if I have any luck, if not might just get mechanic to do it when I drop it in next.

lol, Im talking about the valve body which is located in the transmission under the car (must remove transmission tray to get to it and drain tranny oil) If your handy yourself, give it a go, there are heaps of tutorials on how to open up tour tranny on this forum, if not better take it to your mechanic!
Good luck mate
