adam can yuo feel the notches on the gear stick when yuo change it from park to r n d 2 1... or is it sloppy and easy to move...? check that your gear stick (lever under the car) is bolted to the gearbox lever nice an tight. sometimes that pivot point comes loose an it slides back an forth.....

ok well if the selector is bolted the that shaft on the gearbox.. then you would probrably have an issue with the internal selector inside the box.. drain the oil in the gearbox pan, pull all the 10mm bolts out and carefully remove the pan (getting a replacement pan gasket would be a worthy investment prior to pulling the pan off)you will see where the selector connects on inside the wall of the box.. its a rounded plate the marrys in with a steel shaft... check and make sure the little dowel isn't broken.. easy way to check is to move the selector outside the box and watch the mechanism on the inside... pm if you get stuck....

No gasket, its form in place, so just get a good quality FIP gasket cement.
It could be something as simple as the selector assembly at the base of the selector stick needing adjustment. Take the selector handle off, then unclip the black plastic selector surround, and remove the center console cover, then undo the three screws that hold the black selector scroll cover on and slip that off over the top of the selector stalk, then you will be able to see the mechanism in operation when you move the selector back and forward. I had to adjut the white plastic thingie that controls the park sensor that lets you pull the key out of the ignition as mine had slipped forwards a bit. All sorted now.
Its worth checking that anyway, as it takes five minutes compared to the large messy job of pulling your transmission pan off - especially on a V8, as you usually have to remove part of the exhaust as I recall.
