It is well known technically that the starter motor for a manual should have N-2 gears in relation to the gearbox.

So, if you have a 5-speed gearbox you need a 3-speed starter motor. If you have one for an automatic car it will leak all over the clutch.

and electrocute your nuts.

or

maybe not.

I trust this answers your question

nope, not in my jzz30 auto converted to 6 speed, the starter didnĀ“t match!
the gear from the autostarter has a kind of bearing running in front of trhe gear in a small frame, so it hits the flywheel.
I needed a oem starter from a MKIV supra, where the gear spins free in front.

yeh exactly it all depends on what gearbox you are running!!!!

1jz TT Auto or manual = same starter motor

2jz GE & GTE Auto or 5speed or 6speed = same starter motor

for example if you have a 1jz and fit up a 6 speed gearbox you will need to run the starter motor from a 2jz engine (what usually goes with the 6 speed)

If you have like me a 2JZGTE and run a R154 (stock soarer manual) you will have to run a stock 1jz starter motor.

these starter motors for these gearbox variations:

1JZ Starter works for: R154manual, soarer Auto

2JZ starter works for: W58manual, V160Manual, Supra Auto, Soarer 2JZGE Auto

1UZ starter works for 1UZ auto and W58 manual, so presumably also the others which work with the boxes attached to a 2JZ
