Hi, I have a 396 holden stroker (HQ) and in a couple of weeks will produce 450+ lb/ft. I have an Exceedy heavy duty (claimed 600HP) clutch kit. I want to do a bit of drag racing and I don't think this one will take it. The cover has a 10 1/2" surface but the disc is a standard 10" Supra item supplied by Exedy. I did a second gear start the other day and the clutch smoked up big time. I thought it was the tires until I recognised the smell :- /

The kit was only $380 so it would be nice if I could just install a better disc, 10 1/2" perhaps.

It is street driven and cruised so will need to handle traffic as well. I also do sprints, hill climbs etc.

It will be about 460HP soon and 550HP+ next year with alloy heads.

What do you suggest?

I think you problem will be the torque you are putting out.

Quite a few of us have had our clutches rebuilt by Jim Berry in QLD. He (or I guess any decent specialist) can build a clutch to handle the power and feel nice to drive as well. They aren't cheap though.

I have an exeedy HD kit in the track car, but I have less power, and I dare say less weight than you. Have a look in the supercharged/turbo'd V8 section and see what they are running in their cars would be my suggestion. Or Talk to Neill Griffiths (Rush performance) who I believe has a supercharged manual. He might be able to sort you out.

Thanks Ben, I did eventually find the details for Jim and have since sent him an email inquiry. I have spoken to Neil when I was considering a gearbox and he was very helpful and knowledgable.

As you say a ton of torque and a heavy car will always find a weak point :- /

It would be nice to know if there was a 10 1/2" disc for the R154 spline though. I like simple (cheap) answers if I can get them.

So do I, mate. If you find one be sure to post the details up.

I'm happy for the weak point to be the clutch. Better than the box or diff.

Or the tyres. Tyres can be fun, but ultimately counter productive.

Jim Berry Clutch and install a cromolly billet 1st Gear thrust washer and bearing retainer in the gearbox - otherwise a $20 part will damage the whole box with that torque rating.

Clutch disk can be made to any specifications - your problem will be finding a PULL clutch cover / pressure plate to that size. I do not recommend running a 10.5" disc because the pressure plate can handle it - the clutch actually flops around inside the bell housing and that's why there is a tolerance of 0.25" on each side.

Give Jim a call - he wont answer emails in much detail compared to his phone calls. Something like a 4000lbs clamp pressure plate + carbotic button clutch with a solid center should keep you out of trouble.

You will need a custom flywheel or adapt the R154 flywheel to the engine that you have. The standard pressure plate is remodified to run 4000lbs of clamp and is made of high quality materials from factory. Do not run an alloy flywheel - run a proper steel or cromolly flywheel as it will bend under pressure from the new clamp load when released.

Clutch will cost you around $1200 change over with deliveries each way and billet parts will cost you about $300 + install in the gearbox.
