I'd buggered a transmission on my 1UZ Hilux project with a badly balanced tailshaft so I got the tailshaft re-made and balanced, then replaced my gearbox. The vibrations from the old box are gone, but I'm still having another problem that I was having with the old box.

Reverse gear intermittently disengages, as though it's cutting in and out between neutral and reverse.

The only parts I've used from the old box are the torque converter, and the neutral switch (it goes over the selector to tell the computer what gear I'm in) since the box I bought was missing that sensor.

So obviously I suspect that sensor. But I'm not 100% sure it's the cause - reverse works fine idling backwards for as far as i want. However, if I use a little throttle, it starts to disengage intermittently.

Before I go and buy another one, I'm hoping someone else has had a similar problem and can tell me what's causing it.

Another thing that I've been wondering is if it's not that sensor, could it be the computer? Or even the diff? Can diff's work fine in the forwards gears but disengage intermittently in reverse?

the transmission is an A341E (4-speed auto from a Toyota Soarer) and I've attached a photo of the sensor I mean.

I removed the neutral switch from the gearbox, kept it in park, and plugged it in (so that I could start the car, but it would always think I was in park). I then removed all the other plugs and tested reverse gear. The problem was gone! So I plugged things in one by one until I narrowed it down to one plug. It's the speed sensor on the extension housing.

I've tired replacing that sensor with one from my old box since they're a generic part (not the extension housing speed sensor), but it's still doing it, So I'm thinking there's a break in my loom, or my computer is faulty.

I guess my next step is to call out an auto-electrician to see if the loom is ok.

Get a multimeter and some wire and test the loom yourself for continuity.

Thanks for the suggestion Matt. I've bought a multimeter, so I just gotta wait for it to stop raining so I can play!

Does anyone know how to read the transmission error codes without the overdrive light? I can read the engine errors codes by connecting the TE1 and E1 connected together, then counting the flashes from the "Check Engine" light, but the articles on this site about diagnosing the transmission requires me to watch the "Overdrive Off" light.

My engine and transmission are in a hilux, so I don't have the Soarer dash to read :-(

Shouldn't be too hard to wire up the OD light i would have thought.

Anyone have a diagram around?

I found the wiring diagrams and temporarily wired up the overdrive light (connected a test-light between "+B" and the O/D switch).

I then followed the diagnostics procedure. Neither the engine or transmission are showing any fault codes.

I've also bought a spare ECU from the "Parts for Sale" section of this site. With that fitted, reverse still does the same thing, which tells me both the ECU's are fine.

I'm considering just connecting a relay that will disconnect the speed sensor when I'm in reverse, but that'll be a last resort.

Does anyone know how many pulses per revolution the sensor sends, and how many the ECU is expecting? I read somewhere that on a Crown, one speed sensor goes via the ABS and the other via the dash. I'm wondering if a Soarer does the same (mine's from a UZZ31), and if either the ABS or dash modify the signal before sending it on to the ECU. I don't have either the speedo or ABS in my project (my speedo is independent of the rest of the wiring).

I ended up just wiring up a normally-closed (NC) relay in to disengage the speed sensor in reverse.

Here's a link to another site where I had some more replies.

Hope this helps.

Hi Guys
I have just last week rebuilt my trans in my UZZ32 supercharged V8, this exhibited the symptoms you describe, losing drive in reverse etc, as the trans got worse so did the problem..

Since the rebuild the issue has gone away..

This would tend to let the sensors out of the picture, perhaps disconnecting the sensor has some other effect on the trans that alleviates the problem but not the fault.

It appears to be related to low pressures and or worn clutch packs etc.

Best way to isolate the problem is to use both feet and brake as you reverse up to keep the revs higher, if the trans then holds reverse you know you have an internal pressure issue in the box.

Try cleaning the filter and also lifting the throttle pressures a little this may help.

What type of oil are you using in the trans as this can also effect the way the trans works in reverse.
