r154 ranging from 1200-2000 for the box..saw one with a v8 adapter go on ebay for 2100. kits for 1jzs are pretty cheap, Joshua Rao has his for 2500, Dan has his for $3500, and Megan has whole half cut for 3k.
w58s are much cheaper..shouldnt be more than 500-700 i think. adapters should be easy to source as a lot of people have gone that route..but ive never really researched the w58 route as i always aimed to go well over 200rwkw, which would be the limit of the box. w58 is ment to shift a lot smoother than a r154 though.
you would also need pedal assembly, tailshaft, etc
Yeah cheers mate, have looked into it since I have had my Soarer, so few years now, just finally considering it now since the prices have dropped,
Yeah I would be going W58 and then getting extractors and then later on when I would consider charging her - this is when I would swap with 54, but would prefer the smoother shifts for now plus I am going to be working on the exterior and interior after the gearbox and extractors.
I am thinking if I can get: W58 box Adaption plate Clutch Tailshaft Pedal assembly Other, such as spiggot bearing etc.
For under 2k, it would be a very reasonable deal and doing it myself would bring the installation costs down.

Christian; Mate i can see where your comming from by doing a 58 box and then once you have done all the other mods go to a 154. what i generaly do is try to do things once as it tends to save you a lot of money and heart ache. If you plan is to eventualy charge/ Turbo the V8,start to think about what you are going to need to support those changes and also know what your end Hp and torque is going to be (or close to it). That way you can plan each step and do it once. if you are looking at a 154 kit for the V8 i have one here not been fitted to any thing yet that is pedals, box (remote linkage), fly wheel, clutch (New), bellhousing, slave and master cylinders,I have a drive shaft but i am unsure if it is the correct lenght for the 5 speed. $3800 + postage.
I am thinking a W58 for the cost wise and I will then be getting Neil's headers and possibly looking into an ECU to squeeze a few more kw's out, this would be around the 170 rwkw mark, so I will be fine with the W58 box, as it will be driven properly, still driven hard, but there will be not clutch dumping etc.
The R154 as it costs a fair bit more, but can handle alot more power does sound really tempting for later mods, I can't see me finding the money and time to charge the Soarer later, so I will probably leave it manual N/A as this will still be a hell of a lot funner to drive.
As I will then be working on the body and the interior.
This is my plan anyway, Lew have you done the procedure many times before? If so what are the things I need to look for when undertaking the task,

Christian; If you arn't going to charge it then a 58 will be fine. Castlemain rod shop do the bellhousing for both the 58 and 154 so that side is easy to get. one thing that will have to be made up or bought from toyota is the hump for the floor around the gear lever. As the gear lever will sit inside the cab a little bit. then the console section for the 5 speed, thay are also available from toyota. in saying all this aswell i recon the 6 speed Neil is playing with would be a better option as the ratios are better and the 6th gear would drop your cruising revs down lower for fuel usage. Mate just keep track of what Neil is doing with the 6 speed it may be a little bit more than the 58 and would be slightly less than a 154 option. I think Neil is up to what clutch to use infront of the 6 speed but it seems he has got every thing else sorted. hahah a lot funner to drive (HELL YER)i drove damien smiths when Neil first put the 58 in his 31 and yer mate totaly different car to drive and a LOT MORE FUNNER.... LOL

If your eventually going to go down the FI route, it makes sense to put the R154 in first, do it once and do it right.
Easy enough to change it later on from a W58 to an R154, but it just seems more logical to save that extra work and do it right the first time.
I have pondered using an W58 in my BMW with the 1UZ donor engine, but I know that I will end up running it supercharged so it may as well be done right from the start with an R154.
Cheers Lew! yeah I have read a few topics, are you relating to this?
If so, yeah this doesn't really matter, sits in a good position I think!
I will just move the TEMS switches into the ashtray area.
Neils 6 speed setup does sound tempting and after all I won't be going down this path for a few months, maybe just hold on and do my research first, cheers guys.
